New York Awarded AFBL Franchise
New York, NY

The newly formed AFBL has announced that New York has been awarded a franchise. The front office has just finished up meetings to decide on the major league club's mascot along with the minor league franchise locations and their mascots, and is proud to announce that the major league team and all minor league affiliates will be located within the five boroughs of New York City.

Manhattan will host again own a professional baseball squad as the New York City Brewers represent the proud brewing tradition of Manhattan in a newly built ballpark along the Hudson River.

The AAA affiliate will be known as the Brooklyn Hitmen and will play their games in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The AA affiliate will be known as the Bronx Baycats, and will play their games in Pelham Bay, Bronx.

The A affiliate will be known as the Staten Island Seafarers, and will play their games in Great Kills, Staten Island

The Rookie League affiliate will be known as the Queens Beach Bums, and will play their games in Rockaway Beach, Queens.

Brewers GM discusses season expectations
« Reply #1 on: June 02, 2013, 11:41:07 am »
From the office of the GM, for immediate release:

"The entire front office of the New York Brewers is excited for the best day on the calendar- Opening Day. The Brewers are exited to welcome West Virginia to the New Hilltop Park and expect a sold out crowd for the return of baseball to Manhattan. The front office has been working around the clock to put together a team that we feel will compete for a Frontier League Pennant.

The Brewers value the opinion of our fans, and we have become aware of some concern about the major league roster and prospects that were drafted in the inaugural AFBL draft. The front office's evaluation of our players and prospects differs significantly from the projections that we have seen discussed. We have built the Brewers around our unique ballpark and feel that our players have the tools to make them successful in the 'dead ball' era park that we will play in. We have confidence in our coaching staff's ability to use each player's attributes to the betterment of the team, and we fully expect our player development staff to develop our young players according to our team's strategy.

We would like to thank our fans for their early adoption of the Brewers, and look forward to competing for the pennant. Baseball is here!"

2013 New York Brewers Season Review- New York, NY

2013 was a disappointing inaugural season for the New York Brewers. Although few had them as preseason contenders, the 68-94 finish was well below the consensus opinion. GM Joel Schrock, though disappointed with the season, was upbeat when talking about the future. "I don't think we expected this to be easy. A baseball team, like any other business, is all about putting together the best portfolio of assets. Our assets did not make us competitive this year, but I hardly feel that is an indication of future problems."
According to the front office, the team was built in the inaugural draft around a strategy of maximizing value with each pick, without making a "now or later" decision on when to field a championship-caliber team. "We feel that the most successful teams have historically been the perennially good teams, not teams that targeted a specific year to win in" said Schrock. "We were more likely to take the 25 year-old, solid player, and leave the aging veteran or risky prospect on the board." This strategy left the Brewers with a young, inexperienced 2013 roster, but club officials are confident that the core of the team will remain productive for the next 5-7 years.
The team struggled to adapt to their New Hilltop Park, putting up a 30-51 record on the road. They seemed to make adjustments with better defensive players getting playing time as the season went on, but the team's continued adaptation to the odd ballpark will be something to watch in future years. New Yorkers were often not watching, as the team had the worst attendance in the AFBL at 13,472 patrons/game. Brewers pitchers allowed 105 home runs on the year, significantly less than the 154 home run average for the Patriot League. This was, of course, offset by the league's worst WHIP, ERA (and perhaps related, worst BABIP). Although the Brewers starting pitchers had the league's 3rd best ERA, the bullpen managed to negate this with the league's worst ERA.
As the calendar turns to 2014, the Brewers have a number of decisions to make. The first order of business is the Amateur Draft. Club officials are predictably vague about the team's intentions, but a source familiar with the team's strategy indicated that the Brewers comfortable with their core and are looking for upside, even if that upside is a bit riskier than the talent the Brewers have been historically interested in.
Trade rumors have begun to swirl regarding the New York outfield. LF Kenneth Krant, slotted to be the team's starting left fielder going into spring training, was lost to a knee injury in March that kept him out for the entire season. The Brewers certainly have a logjam of capable outfielders, with Chris Flannery in RF, Joe Sloan in CF, and either Alvin Kane or Kenneth Krant in LF. "This is an organization that will always preach depth" says Schrock. "Obviously, we needed it in left field this year." Schrock's phone should be quite busy this offseason with such an obvious asset in left to move. Although no one would comment publicly on the OF situation, it appears the Brewers could actually be looking to move Flannery, Kane and Krant, filling the corner outfield spots from the 2013 bench players. The experiment of playing Sloan in CF seemed to work quite well, as he produced 2.6 WAR despite an OPS+ of 99. The thought is that the Brewers may be better served going with cheap defense in the OF, concentrating their hitters in the infield. If so, the team could have a very different look come opening day 2014.
When asked for his 2013 highlights, Schrock cited the defensive awards handed out in the offseason. "The fact that we could get Ben [Crossin], Joe [Sloan] and Esteban [Osorid] fielding awards speaks to the emphasis that we put on defense this year." While the defensive wizardry was not enough to make the Brewers competitive this year, it may be something to build on in the future.

From the office of the GM- New York Brewers transactions of November 15, 2013.

Today, the New York Brewers made several significant moves to improve the club going forward. The front office has been interested in bringing young talent into the organization, and the draft and meeting of the teams today provided an opportunity to do just that. Although the Opening Day team for 2014 will look very different than the 2013 team, we are confident that the organization is moving forward in the best possible way.
Our first pick (2nd overall) of the 2013 amateur draft is 22 year old Cisco "The Kid" Castro, a college pitcher who was on most draft boards as a closer. We believe he will be capable of a starting role, so he will join our minor league system as a SP in 2014. Cisco had a 13.1 K/9 rate in 2013, and we are quite excited to see how he develops.
The second pick of our draft was 1B Kip Bowling. He was a college 1B, but we love his arm. He will also start the 2014 season as a SP, and we think he has what it takes to make the major league roster after his conversion.
The Brewers would also like to announce 2 major trades. We have received P Curt Hardin, P Kamal Papin, and OF Sebastiaan Libbinga from Massachusetts for P Alger Paschke and OF Alvin Kane. Hardin (29) can touch 99 with his fastball and pitched in middle relief for the Americans in 2013. Papin (20) served as a closer for the Americans Rookie League affiliate (Fort Myers), but will be stretched out as a starting pitcher in the Brewers organization. Libbinga put up a 106 OPS+ as a 23 year old for the Americans in 2013, playing excellent defense in right field.
The Brewers also received P Chris Neal, OF Jeff Foster, and OF Juan Gonzalez from Colorado for P Esteban Osorid, P Ben Floyd, and OF Chris Flannery. Neal (17) is one of the top pitching prospects in the league, putting up a 128 ERA+ for Grand Junction (A) in 2013. Foster (27) struggled in 2013, but his gap power should play well in New Hilltop Park. He projects as the Brewers starting RF. Juan Gonzalez (21) impressed our scouts with his excellent defense in all three outfield positions. Once he develops his bat, he will definitely find his way to New York.
Obviously, the organization is losing several key contributors to our inaugural 2013 season. Collectedly, we are losing 377 IP and 859 AB from our 2013 roster. LF will be filled by Kenneth Krant, who lost 2013 to injury, and RF will be filled by the newly acquired Jeff Foster. We are quite excited about our 2014 pitching staff, as we feel we have a number of young pitchers ready to step into roles on the ML team.

Prospect Valdemar Legarth promoted to AA Bronx
« Reply #5 on: July 31, 2013, 11:46:40 am »
New York (AP)- May 1, 2014

LF Valdemar Legarth was promoted from A Staten Island to AA Bronx, according to the New York front office. Legarth was ranked the #22 prospect in the preseason, following an offseason switch from CF to LF. He was acquired from New Jersey in June 2013, spending most of the 2013 season at A for both organizations. "We just felt it was time" said Brewers GM Joel Schrock. "He is still getting the bat knocked out of his hands a bit, and we would obviously like to see a bit more patience at the plate, but the glove is ready for the big leagues. The bat will develop with time, and we want to get him moving up the depth charts."

Legarth will start in LF and hit in the #2 spot for the Bay Cats tonight in Wellington, KY.

He can't be too far away from the majors... 2016 or maybe even 2015.

I'll be keeping  very close eye on his development... maybe he's the one that got away, now that would be really sad.
