Title: 2014 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on July 22, 2013, 11:37:00 pm
The 2014 season is about to begin! Working on turning the calendar year over game. I'll have an updated league file/reports up in the next 15 minutes or so!

File/reports are updated leading up to the first day of Spring Training. We'll sim the 1st half of ST on Wednesday morning, the 2nd half of ST on Friday morning, and then Opening Day 2014 on Monday morning! Thanks!

Statslab is updated (for the most part). I have a few kinks to iron out tomorrow.

Any franchises that want to change/update logos, mascots, minor league city moves, ballpark changes (name, wall heights, dimensions, factors), or a future relocation of the ML franchise (pending commish approval) must write up a press release in the Team Press Releases thread before the Opening Day sim (Monday the 29th). Thanks!

None of my picks made my franchise's top 20 prospects list.  WEAK DRAFT, lol.

I have done some cleaning up of the .zip files of the league file. I trimmed down the League File (top right of the forum) to include only the 'settings' folder in the 'AFBL.lg' folder plus all the ".dat" files. The Images Pack is a zipped folder of the "AFBL.lg\news\html\images" folder. This will greatly reduce the size of the files and help out the website's backend.

Anyone having issues should...
-close their game
-delete the AFBL.lg folder from your 'saved_games' folder in the OOTP14 folder
-download the updated League File (zipped folder of 'AFBL.lg' folder with only "settings' folder and .dat files)
-click 'Check for updated League Files' (there shouldn't be any updates since the just uploaded League File is current at ST Opening Day 3/8/14)
-export for the 1st Half ST sim which will run tomorrow morning (7/24) at 6am CT

Thanks guys!

Yes they should be. I just created the zip file this morning. Please let me know if it doesn't reflect it and I'll do some checking...

I just added an AFBL Chatroom using the web irc chat node we used for the live draft last night. I think the link will continue to work so I'll keep it as an active link in the top right of the forum for anyone that wants to hang out in there to talk trade openingly or privately or talk about whatever.

Hey matt, looks like our trade wasn't processed properly in game - my guys are still in my organisation while Pratt is now listed as a free agent.

I was a dummy and processed it before grabbing the exports. I've fixed it on my end and have spoken to Mike. Sorry about that!

I have finished the ST sim. I'm currently uploading file/reports. Running new images and player photos as needed for the 1st regular season sim so it's taking longer than usual.

Also, the new rule for signing/claiming FAs goes into effect on Monday. Starting that day, teams can sign 2 FAs per 24-hour window. This will be in effect for the regular season until we finish the playoffs when it will go down to 1 per 24-hour then go back to the 2-per again when the next regular season starts.

We won't enable an Active Roster Size Limit for the minors. Just keep in mind that the CPU will only dress 30 players with the rest being inactive at any time.

Final ST sim reports/file are uploaded. Statslab will be up soon. Opening Day Sim will be Monday where we'll go longer than normal simming April 8th-20th. Thanks!

The game also regenerated the Season Predictions report if you care to check that out.

Matt - the game is showing last season's predictions (but the predictions in the online reports are the new ones), it still has Luis Soto at NJ when I traded him away to Ohio.

I'm not sure if you have to manually activate them in game, or if they only update once we pass opening day.

It's only the predictions, not a big deal, they'll roll over I'm sure when we get into the 2014 season proper.

Something weird is happening with your new image pack (assuming you've uploaded it) a few guys (on my team anyway) their profile pics (not player pics) have them wearing FA clothing rather than my team's uniform, or the unifroms of th eteams they were on before (Newbold CAL uniform, Pratt COL uniform etc.)

I'll have to double check but its the default way of handles rookie status as in the game. It's by service time (can't recall the number) or ABs.

As far as ROY voting in statslab, anyone with less than 45 days of service at the start of the season is eligible.

That is, in essence, the MLB rule (although the MLB rule states that days in September do not count towards the 45 days).

matt - some weird things are going with the image pack...

The new guys I traded for in 2014 are now in their right uniforms, however guys I either traded for in 2013 or were on my roster from the inaugural draft are still in their old uniforms (Tim Mayfield is back in NY gear) or in FA clothes...lol

This is all related to the profile pictures (top left corner of the player screen) not the images used in the statistics leaderboards

E.g. Dax Taylor in the previous images pack was nicely in his NJ uniform, but in the latest pack he's in FA clothing.

I think if you go to the League Setup > Player & Picture Options and hit the "Force Update/Generate All Player Pictures" button this will create the right pictures, then just upload the folders you have already been uploading.

If you upload the file I'll test it out to make sure all looks fine.

Technically yes, but you have humans involved :D If people then don't download this new file, but decide to make changes after they've already exported it could stuff up what they've planned.

Common sense and email and forum notification woudl be fine, but it could stuff up for someone who doesn't pay that much attention to the forum or emails, probably just easiest and safest to wait until after the next sim to activate the trade.

That could cause alot of problems but it doesn't hurt to ask the group i could go the first week of the season with my current team but then what happends if a player get injured for a long time if he is on my team well that sucks but if i dont even have him yet

You still get your guys before the sim, so no injuries can occur to the guys you traded for, it's just more effort for matt to set up the lineups prior to the sim, rather than you and him setting your own lineups.

My Monday morning is going to be hectic enough with work (multiple projects combining to hit at the same time AHH!) so that being said, I'm processing the CO-ON trade now and reuploading updated file/reports. I imported any exports that teams submitted since this morning's sim.

Sorry guys but this will really help me get the Opening Day sim in on Monday. Please redownload in the game once I get the update finished. I'll be sending an email out as well. I hope this doesn't cause any problems. I'll be contacting the teams that exported individually so we make sure there aren't any surprises. Thanks guys!

Newest file uploaded, reports are extracting now, Statslab is uploading/updating now.

Please 'Check for updated file' in your game again if you haven't already prepped for the Opening Day sim for Monday morning at 6am CT. This sim is slightly longer to get us on schedule (April 8th-20th).

Thanks for your understanding guys!

Statslab is currently broken --> not sure if its an easy fix or if I have to rebuild

Alright guys... I just finished chatting with tech support for Dreamhost. The issue was with them. The technician rebooted "our server" (believe Dreamhost has servers with everyone's data scattered over many) which resolved our domain load times. He told him that "it looked like it [our domain, afblbaseball.com] needed to be rebooted possibly due to a hung process."

I apologize about the slow over the weekend but we should be good to go for our 2nd season -- 2014!

Opening Day sim is tomorrow (Monday) morning at 6am CT.

Also, our new rule change about claiming/signing FAs goes into effect starting tomorrow. During the regular season and postseason, teams are allowed to claim 2 FAs per 24-hour window, the rule goes to our original 1 FA per 24 hours during the offseaon.

Thanks guys!

Don't believe these predictions (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/reports/news/html/leagues/league_100_preseason_prediction_report.html), they have my SP prospect Jenkins going 21-12 and last season's PL Triple Crown winner, Sepulveda not even on the top pitchers list.

I think with Jenkins because he was used as both a starter and a reliever during ST the game engine has gone whacky and thinks he'll see the same profile of appearances in 2014... lol

The predictions in game are also last season's predictions, they don't update until after opening day (I think) or until matt runs them manually depending on what his settings are set at.

Can't be right matt, look at the ones in game... Soto (pitcher in the PL) is marked as at NJ, when' he's been at Ohio since I traded him there part way through 2013.

The ones in the online reports are new and based off rosters that people set for ST. The ones in game just haven't updated yet, but after/during this sim I believe they will.

i wanna say first in my team. its more difficult to see that in my team because i havent good SPs with big stamina (only montoya, a 2 pitches SP) and i use the 4 man rotation so i need to give them less innings

i remember the first no hitter in the league

Great start to my season even tho i blew the first game to NC but Johnny Jackson hit his first HR if the season he is 43, and to my suprise the catcher i traded for has hit 3HR wow, but i am glad to see Danny P playing well in a hitters league wish he would have done that for me :( and then getting swept by OHIO with S Smith hitting a HR in every game pisses me off i cant beat them, good start not injursys only sore spot is Pete Saxson not hitting but he is 20 might put him in AAA to help him not lose development. I hope NC can come back they were a good team last year and great start for WV :) and Oh first 6 rbi game of the season from my back up catcher

Deja vu all over again, as the Aviators stumble out of the gate.

It's a marathon, not a sprint, and we played the part of the tortoise last year.

WOW - OK the Illinois catcher was rubbish, but still 5 hits and 6 stolen bases, awesome!

Since the opening dime of 7-6 my team has gone 5-13 only a 2 game winning streak agaisnt Mass helped us any, and the worst part is i had Ohio tied int he ninth at home for the last to games of this sim and lost both i havent been able to beat them since the league started at all. Even NC has 3 wins against me, the problem is my pitching staff which has really sucked this year 4.99 - 7th in PL starters era my pen has been ok but the worst part is my pitchers are walking to many batters the only good part of my team was we didnt walk battters or strike out last year first in both catagories this year my team has the 2nd most k in the PL :( this month is key but with only 2 teams with winning rec i am still very much in the hunt.

This is odd:

1. Hicks .340
2. Campos .354
3. Chavez .303
4. Wright .324
5. Santos .300
6. Clay .282
7. Kinlaw .204
8. Rodriguez .216

That's my lineup as I exported it this morning.  The top 5 batters are all at or above .300, yet my team is last in the PL in average (.256).  That tells me that my bad hitters are REALLY bad, or else this league is full of good offenses.

Derek Maxwell Revealed to Be Having Affair; Wood Chopping Accident Now in Doubt
Thursday, May 29th, 2014

After reportedly injuring his back earlier this year when helping a neighbor chop firewood, rumors flew that his injuries had little to do with firewood. Now more reports have now begun to surface that Ohio Knights SS, Derek Maxwell, hurt himself as the result of an illicit encounter with a mistress. Neither Derek nor the 28 year old massage therapist have confirmed nor denied the affair, but local newspapers and social media outlets have been abuzz with messages and images of the two supposedly gallivanting around his hometown together.

The Knights have thus far released no official statement regarding the matter nor any plans to discipline him based on his actions.

Neither Maxwell nor his agent returned any calls regarding the reports but many fans are bound to be disappointed to hear of his seeming infidelity.

All Star voting has been enabled in Statslab. Outfield vote is split up by position (must have qualified innings at the position to be eligible). We have 4 sims before the ASG which will be Aug 19th sim.

I have also allowed owners to change their ASG ballot before the voting ends FYI.

Yeah, we're now 1-9 against you, and 2-5 against NY....  dern yankees!

Well, we're slowly coming around.  Disappointed with the 5-5 record because we hit 21 homers as a team and had a respectable 3.77 team ERA today.  Should have been a 7 or 8 win sim, but my team just seems to stink in 1-run games.

Ya and over here matt Robbie Kerrison has done amazing for me

2013 Colorado - AFBL    31    29    0    0    2    1    6.53    20.2    25    15    15    9    4    26    0    0    1.40    .333    -2.7    -0.4    65
2014 Ontario - AFBL    32    28    0    0    0    0    0.84    21.1    16    2    2    1    7    24    0    0    1.08    .283    10.1    0.6    487

But my first round draft pick has already had a drop off in talent :(. With 2 more winning sims i could be above .500 for the first time ever i think or a reallly good sim this time round but i may have tinkered with a few to many things we will see now wont we

Weird stat of the day:

NC is 9-5 vs Ontario, 5-3 vs Ohio, 4-4 vs Massachusetts, 4-5 vs Kentucky, 4-6 vs New York and West Virginia, and 1-9 vs New Jersey.

Guess which team our pitchers have performed the BEST versus?

If you guessed New Jersey, who we are just 1-9 versus, you guessed correctly.  Okay, so we have a better ERA vs several other teams, but we have posted our lowest WHIP (1.22) vs them and held their batters to a .230 average.  Yet somehow, they manage to beat us time and time again....probably because they've held US to a .195 average this year, while nobody else has kept us below .250.

Nice stat pick up there Chappy.

Looks like you'll get Sepulveda, Pratt, Rodriguez and Craft in our 4 game series - hopefully we can keep up our form.

Still surging, as NC posts the best record in the PL this sim and moves into 4th place.  Still have 9.5 games to make up on Ohio to reach a wild card, but if we can stay healthy, we've got a chance.

Rodriguez hit .303 today in place of Curds Campos.

You've got a couple of good pitchers there that we have just struggled to hit against, no more games between us until August now.

Another sign that things are looking up in NC; we got the Pitcher and Batter of the month awards.

PL's Best Batter Announced
Tuesday, July 1st, 2014

The hard-hitting right fielder from North Carolina, Jos? Ch?vez, wielded a big bat in June and was hailed as the Patriot League Batter of the Month.

He hit a healthy .356 with 11 home runs, 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

So far this season Ch?vez is hitting .318 with 26 home runs.

PL Pick for Top Pitcher in June is Le?n
Tuesday, July 1st, 2014

Norberto Le?n hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Patriot League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In June the North Carolina starter earned a 5-0 mark in 6 starts. He threw 39.1 innings, struck out 41 and compiled a solid 3.20 ERA.

So far this year Le?n has a 9-2 record with a 3.56 ERA.

Pitcher is very tired or just plain tired and the strategy is setup to pull when tired but there should be exceptions like when the game is over so just let him get the SHO

11.5 out of 16 teams have voted for the ASG (1 owner only voted for their league).

Teams without an ASG ballot submitted: Arizona, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia

Just a head's up. Voting is optional but strongly encouraged. I'd love to get everyone to participate!

That's great!

Matt, for reference what are the qualifying criteria to go on the All-Star list? Also I noticed that one guy who I may have originally voted for is now not on the list anymore (I assume he was injured and then hadn't played the required % of games/innings). If that's the case do new guys get added to the list as they become eligible?

I ask as I thought maybe 1 or 2 of my guys who were not regulars at the start of the year or who came back from injury could've got on the ballot after the last couple sims, but it didn't happen.

Statslab has been updated including the Draft Module (the listed draft order is subject to change to reflect winning percentage, postseason results, and remaining trades) to include the newly released draft pool if teams want to prepare for the 2014 Ammy Draft leading up to the trade deadline.

Reminder for our newest members, that draft picks are free game in trades and the draft order is determined on the season's standings (worst to first Win%) with the postseason hierarchy ending the round (AFBL champs last).

I'm assuming Matt you'll put the draft date back to November after the playoffs so we get the correct order? In game it's showing as October 6th draft.

Jeebus, is this a prolonged career-ending injury?

White Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis
Saturday, August 9th, 2014

North Carolina Aviators's first baseman, Rory White, had been feeling under the weather for some time. His legs tingled, his arms ached, and at times his vision blurred and he had trouble seeing the ball. After encouragement from his wife, White went to see a doctor, who sent him to get an MRI done. The scan showed plaque located on White's spine. The diagnosis: MS. "I had a feeling something was up, and I'm glad I saw a doctor when I did. I hope to play through this and stop when the doc tells me to."

White has seen his error percentage increase and his OBP fall over the last month, and the slump may be attributed to his disease. North Carolina Aviators owner, Oscar Hall, held a press conference yesterday to confirm the team's dedication to White. "We in the North Carolina Aviators Front Office will work to see Rory through this tough time and hope he can stick with us as long as possible."

True, but it doesn't often happen that way, many other leagues it's some 5/6/7 type guy who gets the perfect game - if it even happens.

I'm stoked though, only 101 pitches thrown as well, will keep the ace fresh.

Good, now do me a favor and hand Ohio some losses.   ;D

I would like this as well. Massachusetts has the second best record in the league since the All-Star break at 16-8. With my ace Rob Phillips set to begin a rehab stint, I'm hoping to finish the season on a high note. Maybe even make a late run at the wildcard. Of course that would require beating Ohio, Chappy's NC team and you.

PL is getting tighter by the minute, we run hot and cold. Ohio, NC and Mass are making a charge, and WV is probably the only steady team so far.

Huge next sim witht he top 3 all meeting each other. Chances for NC and Mass to get closer.

WV 3@Ohio and 3vNJ
NJ 3@Ohio and 3@WV
Ohio 3vWV and 3vNJ

I was on a 18 game losing streak when my team rolled in to West Vrigina and won back to back games for the first time since 6-27 to 6-29 when we beat OH 3 in a row.  And i was beating Ohio in every game i played them they won all there games on walk offs FFS :'( why man if i had won those.

Yeah it is looking like a fun finish. I have 2 @ NC followed by 4 @ NY this sim. I am a combined 21-10 versus those two teams this season. I need at least a 5-1 sim to climb back to .500.

Haven't seen that one before! I admit I had a chuckle when I looked at his player card and it says: Injured (Multiple Sclerosis (DTD)), out for 5 days!

Even though he's only out a few days, the news story makes it seem like it IS going to end his playing career early and that he's just going to "play through it until the doctors tell him to stop."

His ratings are still decent, but he's in a heck of a slump.

my first 22 games after all-star break that includes 15 game losing streak after break (3 loses before)
Post All-Star Break 4 18 2 0 0 3.38 22 22 194.3 206 86 73 15 66 140 1.40 .269 .313
now if that was a pitchers line i wouldnt mind 18 losses with a 3.38 era

The draft happens after our season is finished, so the order will be adjusted before the draft.

WV 0-3 v OH & 2-1 v NJ 2-4
NJ 3-0 v OH & 1-2 v WV 4-2
OH 3-0 v WV & 0-3 v NJ 3-3

Ohio knows how to beat West Virginia, West Virginia has NJs number, and NJ typically gets the better of Ohio. At this rate whichever of these 3 teams tops the standings will have a HUGE advantage based on current season match ups.

Bottom falling out on the season for Cali after the all-star break with a 7-21 month of August. Makes me regret dragging my feet at the trading deadline. Might have to get very active right after the season and prior to the draft. My problem was that I was caught between going for prospects/picks or trying to bring in a bat or two to to try to make a legitimate run. In the end I did neither and the team's just petering out.

White seems to have "recovered" from his MS nicely.

White PL's Best of the Week
Monday, September 8th, 2014

His solid numbers speak for themselves. That's why Rory White of the North Carolina Aviators was named the Patriot League Player of the Week.

For the week White batted .391 (9-23) with 5 home runs and 13 RBIs.

In his 2014 season totals, White has 29 home runs, .273 BA, .349 OBP, 76 RBIs and 62 runs scored.

File are reports are updated. Our final regular season sim will be on Friday and the playoffs will begin on Monday.

5 of the 6 playoff berths have been claimed with the PL 2nd Wildcard spot still up for grabs with Ohio holding onto a 1.5 game lead over the surging North Carolina.

And now for something spectacular.

One of the AFBLs best pitchers, Jorge Sepulveda, just threw 8 innings, and hit a home run (2 RBIs) and went 3 for 3 at the plate in the same game!!

Sepulveda hits a long ball! (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/reports/news/html/box_scores/game_box_5189.html)

Bah, if I hadn't faced Jersey I'd be in a playoff spot now!!!

1.5 games out seemed impossible a month ago, but here we are...  4 games to play, 1 vs Ohio, and I'm 1.5 games out...

I was 4-5 again good sim my favroit line tho b - E. Sexton Jr. pinch hit for E. Sexton Sr in the 7th

And NC I helped I beat OH 2 out of 3 but now my dreams of having not traded the 3 overall pick were dashed the best I could hope for is 5th but facing 2 teams that have won a combined 200 games and one is 19-3 against me its going to be tough to get one win let allone 4

Yeah, WV has got our number this year, but if we can see off Ohio or NC in the wildcard round, we'll get to face WV and get our revenge, hopefully :D

End of the season awards have been turned on in Statslab so go place your votes there. Voting will run until the end of the playoffs. I'm going to let the game decide on defensive awards from now on so that has been turned off in the manual voting process.

We have about half of the owners that have voted for the 2014 Season Awards. Below is who hasn't submitted a ballot in Statslab yet, optional but strongly encouraged to participate in this and all things league related.

Stefin - West Virginia
David - Iowa
Stephen - California
Michael - Kentucky
David - Massachusetts/Pennsylvania
Jason - Indiana
Zach - Illinois
Troy - Arizona

We'll close voting at 6am CT Friday before I run a sim to get us to November 15th (Ammy Draft).

~~

We are currently drafting without a draft timer Statslab as we lead up to our live draft on Sunday or Monday night. Please check in when possible about where we are with the drafting and I'll help out to post updates as much as possible.

~~

Upcoming Sim/Event Schedule:
Wednesday (9/11) - No sim
Friday (9/13) - minor sim for Award results
Sunday night (9/15) or Monday night (9/16) - Live Amateur Draft
Monday or Tuesday (9/17) morning - sim to include draft results plus game calendar year turnover
Wednesday (9/18) - 1st half of Spring Training
Friday (9/20) - 2nd half of Spring Training
Monday (9/23) - Opening Day 2015 then back to our normal sim schedule

Thanks guys!
