Title: 2015 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on September 16, 2013, 06:04:36 am
We have arrived at our 3rd season as 2015 comes along. The Massachusetts franchise has relocated to Pennsylvania to become the Railroaders. Congrats to the 2014 AFBL Champions, West Virginia Hollers. Will they be able to hold the top spot of the league or be dethroned by a new champion?

Prepare for the 2015 season as we will sim the 1st half of Spring Training on Wednesday morning at 6am CT (9/18/13) and the 2nd half of ST on Friday. Then Opening Day 2015 will be next Monday, 9/23/13.

The messages you "can't read" is because the sim went for longer than usual and matt didn't change the settings to keep the old news.

Nothing major missed. But yes the development reports for other teams was really weird and I have no idea what could've caused that.

Hmm. I'll check that out. I might have not had a checkmark selected or something.

Uploading a new game file with all messages and such. I'll update Statslab as well to see if this fixes any of the wackiness a few have found with the development messages.

Now everyone promise not to laugh... I spent a good half an hour getting my spring training rotation, lineups and depth charts all sorted out.

Went to the sim results and then realised I had left the use 7 day lineups on from the playoffs last season, so this meant that Jorge Sepulveda hasn't thrown a pitch in ST yet... he might just be a bit rusty to start the season :(

Shocking start to spring training for California, especially considering Kevin Reynolds and Jose Baez were shuffled to the bullpen to minimize their use/prevent injuries, and I had three MRs in the starting rotation. Weird, wacky stuff.

Matt, Statslab is doing that funny thing again (didn't it do it in ST last year) where the stats shown are not the stats for ST for the individual players, some of my guys are showing 24 games played in the last sim.

We showed some life last year. June through August was good. April, May and September were not. If we can be more consistent then we might have a shot at the playoffs.

But I didn't even have Swain in spring training, I traded him away before the trade deadline in 2014... lol

We had a similar issue with rogue stats in statslab in pre-season last year I beleive and all got sorted in the regular season, but that hasn't happened this year.

My odds now is 0% WOOO first team elimanatied hahaha

Got off to a great start this sim - swept West Virginia and then finished out the sim with a 5 game losing streak.  Just when it looked like I at least had 4 decent starters together in the staff, two down with injuries - one of them for the year.  Dangit!!!!   At least my bats should come back eventually to help turn that 1-7 record in one run games around.  Hopefully.

mendoza out again. in the begining of all the seasons he always gets an injurie ... hoffman, mendoza, bo bacon and sammy cooper are already in the disabled list

we are the worst offense in FL with only 77 runs scored. not a bad sim with a 6-3 and it seems that the players in texas are starting to wake up

again the fucking AI has done the things wrong

17 inning, 1 out and guys in the corners. pitcher at bat, the AI dont do a pinch batter and he bunts (sacrifice, wtf!) ... 2 outs and guys in the 2nd and the 3rd base ... with a fly ball or a ground ball we probably had won this game

in this inning, obviously, the same pitcher losses the game

In Alex McCullaugh's first game against California since the trade to Oregon, we're leading the Explorers 2-1 going into the bottom of the 7th inning when McCullaugh sends a line drive into the left field corner for a 3-run homer and the eventual 4-2 final scoreline for Oregon!

The Explorers currently lead The Battle for the Branch over the Golden Eagles 2-games-to-1.

Yes same thing my catcher gets on base botom of ninth and no pitch runner and the next hitter hits a double which would have tied the game 2 batters later the BACKUP catcher flysout with basebs loaded.

4-6 sim for me not to bad with Flemming getting the win and a ND and some hitting coming back to life. but need a good sim next week

After a 1-3 series against rivals Ohio, we meet West Virgina, a team we struggled against as they went all the way in 2014.

However this time around we get the chocolates with a 3-0 series sweep, with Pratt, Sepulveda and Craft all collecting wins over Marsh, Lloyd and Hatfield.

Patriot league is very tight after the first month with three teams within 0.5 of a game (Ohio, NJ and NC).

We've got three teams (NY, ON, PA) in the bottom half of the standings in the next sim so it might be a chance to get the lead on our own.

5-4, but 3-1 versus North Carolina was a good result.

Boo, ruined a good sim for me, I was 4-1 on the day until our final 3 games.

Lol, I had edited your post instead of quoting it.  Stupid mod powers.

4-4 so i did ok but my new free agent signing form Arizona sucked real bad now i know why he was released. Had a 3 game winning streak as well, with the injury to N Wallace dave is taking over in the rotation but i dont think that is for the best. and a win against NC is awesome now i hope i can do well next sim as well

7-2 sim but NJ kept pace, so we're still only 1 game ahead of them.

Unfortunately, the end may be near for Steve Wright (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/statslab/StatsLab/player.php?player_id=1836), my starting catcher the first two seasons (and first bit of this season).  Starting Wednesday, he's been benched in favor of Sid Matthews (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/statslab/StatsLab/player.php?player_id=2746), a backup catcher who can't really hit but plays much better defensively than Wright.

Age is starting to become a factor in NC.

I anticipated this, which is why I've used my #1 pick in each draft on a C, but they are both still in the low minors and unable to help right away.

Yeah you've had the number on Juan Martinez - not sure why either. Got any tips? ;)

It's you guys and Ohio who are proving difficult for us to beat this year, but we'll soldier on, after trading away our prospects, except Neilsen, we have to win lots of games in the next 3 years so make the most of our 30+ year old guys who have just hit their peak.

In regards to the All-Star game... it is scheduled but for some reason not during the scheduled ASG break 7/8-11 but instead for 7/14 which I believe is when it was last season.

I'm guessing this happened due to the schedule not being regenerated after I made the change to have the regular season start on April 1 instead of being forced to start on a certain week day (Tuesday was the original selection).

I hope to be able to manually move the ASG from 7/14 date to 7/9 where it should be located but I'm still searching for a fix if there is one. I have a message sent to the ootpdevelopments twitter feed and will be posted on the forums to see if this is possible.

Does anyone know if this is even possible? If not, we still have our All-Star Game but it will be played on July 14th.

The Commissioner's Office has a Plan B if the schedule isn't allowed to be modified of changing the start of the 2015 ASG on the 14th to 11:05am (hopefully no extra innings ;) ) so players involved can quickly be jetted from the ASG host site (neutral field or previous year's champion?) to their individual team games.

Whoever is running the @ootpbaseball twitter feed has already replied to my tweets and is going to straight to the source to ask Markus about manually moving the All-Star game. Plus is asking about modifying the Team IDs that are randomly large (i.e. in the 60s and 70s instead of the single digit Team IDs).

I'll keep everyone posted!

Everything is updated as we have reached the All-Star Game break. The 2015 ASG will be played on July 14th at 11:05am due to a league schedule glitch instead of during the actual break. Players selected will magically have no side effects of playing in the ASG then quickly flying to meet their respective teams  8).

There has only been 5 teams that have submitted an ASG ballot so be sure to vote in Statslab before Wednesday's sim!

Thanks guys!

Hold it in Florida so all the rookie league teams can come along to watch :)

And a 4-2 sim, swept neighbours NY, but dropped 2 against bottom placed team Kentucky.

Good idea of the ASG being held in Florida. Maybe the league will build a stadium for this and other exhibition type games in the state...?

That's odd because today it only seems to be doing it in the All-Star voting! My team pitching stats and the leaderboards are back to normal.

In other news, poor SP Ed Haney. After spending the full 2014 season in the minors for "seasoning," he has come up this year with the following stats:

5 games (3 starts), 0-2 record, 13.06 ERA (31 ERA+), 3.10 WHIP (!!), 10.1 innings pitched, 32 hits allowed, 7 home runs, 15 earned runs, 0 walks, 7 strikeouts, .500 BABIP (!!), -0.5 WAR.

Anyone want him, he's only 24?  ;)

Statslab has been updated.

The playoff races in each league have the 3 teams mostly decided with the final games of the season playing for seeding. Will Pennsylvania threaten the current PL playoff teams of (NC, NJ, OH)? Will Illinois go on a tear to cause the FL to worry (OR, TX, CO)?

Will there be any trades from the playoff hopeful teams to shore up any weaknesses on the roster?

2nd half (sort of haha) 2015 is underway!

Finally get another game up on NJ, which is great since I can't seem to beat them myself.  :P

Best news for NC is that we've finally found a Catcher. After going through incumbent Steve Wright (.186 in 204 ABs) and Sid Matthews (.200 in 135 ABs), rookie Al Funk is funking it up with a .351 average through 16 games.  His ratings aren't special, but he was hitting .343 in AAA Raleigh so I thought I'd give him a shot... as long as he's over .200 he's an improvement.

I put a couple of feelers out but no dice. I'm surprised that Kevin Reynolds is still a Golden Eagle, might try to move him again in the off-season.

This was like the second or third sim this season where I made a bunch of roster changes as soon as the update happened, waited to export in case I wanted to change anything last-minute, and then forgot to export! The not-anticipated-at-all debut of outfielder Liam Meadows has to wait until next sim!

SP Ed Haney ended a streak of five consecutive losses with two no-decisions, including 9.1 innings of 5-hit baseball against the Indiana Vipers in a game we ended up losing 2-1.

This was like the second or third sim this season where I made a bunch of roster changes as soon as the update happened, waited to export in case I wanted to change anything last-minute, and then forgot to export!

when i am looking or changing something, i export at least 3-4 times (one for each change). its my way to avoid your situation jejej

lets go isotopes!

3.5 games back, 45 games to go with 6 of these against NC - we're going to put every effort into chasing the Aviators down.

The 9 game lead over 3rd place Ohio seems to be enough now that we have only 4 games left against the Knights.

One of the biggest talking points in New Jersey is whether or not Jorge Sepulveda will gain a hat trick of Triple Crowns. At the moment his main rival is the younger, but just as dominant, hurler from North Carolina, Norberto Leon - this is a race within a race that will surely go down to the final starts of the season.

We also lost All Star CF Martik Geboyan in the last sim - his on base ability is unequaled in the league and will surely be missed at the top of the lineup.

7 games left in the inaugural Battle for the Branch between California and Oregon! We've hung tough but are 6-10 against the Explorers this season. Will take a big effort to come away with the Branch this year, I may even tinker with the starting rotation to make sure Reynolds gets in both series. :)

Everything has been updated. The injury fairy hit hard especially for a few playoff hopeful teams. Check your rosters!  :-\

We're down to the final 4 regular season sims with the playoff race for the 2nd Wildcard in both leagues becoming interesting. In the FL, Colorado has a 11 game lead over Illinois who has been playing well. In the PL, Ohio holds only a 1.5 game over surging Pennsylvania. How will things shake out?

2-0 vs NJ today...  woot!

Aviators double our lead on the Jersey boys from 3.5 games to 7.0 games.

Norberto Leon is having a great season, and today was 2-0   with a 0.60 ERA in 2   starts, fanning 26 batters in 15 innings.

Crazy quiet on deadline day this season - is everyone really that happy with their teams? ;)

I'm happy with most of my team.

I could use an extra quality infielder and an extra quality outfielder, but I'm getting by without them and don't want to give up any of my prospects.

excellent sim to pull back to  .500. We are probably too far behind to make a playoff push, but given the missed games in the first half by key players, and the strong group of prospects in the system Illinois future seems bright.

Doug Wallace is having an incredible season on the hill, 16-5 2.34 ERA and .87 WHIP. Sam Jacobs is a lock down closer and the return of veteran pitcher Bin Zhu from a 14 month layoff has bolstered the pitching staff.

We'll be tough to beat down the stretch, but I think the gap is too wide to catch up in 2015...

Think I have to concede the division now - especially with Fowler gone for 5 weeks. Also looks like Leon will stop Sepulveda from getting a third Triple Crown, fair play to your boys.

Everything is updated (updating Statslab currently)! We are to September so the rosters have expanded to 40. Amateur draft pool has been released so begin prepping for the draft on Nov 15.

The playoff race in the PL for the final wildcard has taken an interesting turn. We have a surging team hoping to cause chaos. Should be a fun final month of the season!

P   Norberto Le?n   9-1, 1.21   Last 10 games

West Virginia's Julian Parra has an outside shot of hitting .400 for the season. He's hitting .394 currently and needs roughly 35-40 hits to finish the season to have a shot.

New Jersey's Jorge Sepulveda is battling North Carolina's Norberto Leon for the PL pitching crown. Sepulveda has claimed this in the league's first 2 seasons. In the FL, there is a small chance of a pitching triple crown with Illinois' Doug Wallace, Oregon's Ned Hass and Antonio Lozano.

Colorado's PJ Foley leads the FL in HR and RBI but won't catch the AVG leader. New Jersey's Ignacio Garlez has an outside shot but would need to go on a power surge to claim it.

Final month will be exciting!

I dont care about the days, i care about who are in the DL. I have now 5 of my best players in the DL but mendoza will be in a days because he is always injuried, a guy who is almost 0.400 avg this month and 13 HRs

I guess it was only a matter of time before the injury bug hit NC, with two key players lost in collisions during today's sim.

Staff ace (arguably #2 behind Leon) Joe Haines is done for the season, but should be good to go for the postseason or at least by the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Rory White, however, is out 8 weeks, so we've got a big hole to fill.  White's one of only 2 players on our team with more than 13 HR.  He was our only real longball threat aside from Chavez with 32 dingers this season.

Not sure who I'll drop into the lineup for him.  hmmm

Okay, so for the next 10 days, I'm going to try out this lineup:

1 CF R C. Hicks - .326-2-31
2 SS R C. Campos - .294-1-52
3 2B R J. Rodriguez - .321-13-62
4 RF L J. Chavez - .315-36-123
5 LF L B. Barbier - .247-13-45
6 CA R A. Funk - .263-5-21
7 1B R E. Kinlaw - .224-11-39
8 3B R C. Alfaro - .224-2-18

It plays to our "small ball" strengths, but I'd really love to see Barbier return to his old form and help Chavez carry the power load.  The bottom of the order is really bad, with a rookie Catcher and a pair of .220 hitters, but at least Kinlaw has a little pop.

Defensively, we're solid... better than opening day, probably.  But I'd rather have White's HRs than Kinlaw's 10 in defense, lol.

Some interesting news items that are out of whack this sim...

PJ Foley hitting record home run 49 - when he actually hit 58 in 2014.

Norberto Leon being mentioned as having the most wins with 22, when Sepulveda got 23 last season.

Weird, it's as if any records set in 2014 aren't being picked up in the news items.

Oh well, the season and career leaderboards show the correct information.

Congrats to those who have made the playoffs, and good luck to the 3 teams still in it in the PL.

Win Puts Le?n in Record Book
Friday, September 18th, 2015

Jorge Montoya no longer holds the top spot for most wins in a season. His league record has been shattered by Norberto Le?n of the North Carolina, who chalked up victory number 22 today at Bojangles Stadium. When the game was decided, the fans gave him a tremendous standing ovation. Speaking after the game Le?n said, "It takes a lot to win 22 in a season at this level... gotta stay healthy... Need a good bullpen... and it never hurts to get a lot of runs on the scoreboard. This season it all came together for me."

His record this year is 22-4 in 33 starts and Le?n has a 2.37 ERA.

Yeah and even then if it was Montoya's record he had 22 wins in 2013, and only 21 in 2014... weird how the news is doing this, also did it on the home runs with Foley as well.

After going 3-19 against you last year your 4 runs in the ninth couldn't put you over the top, and my boys know there is some good stuff on the line if we can win the next 2 games, i dont care if we lose the rest of the sim just against NJ we need wins. and it looks like Ed Sexon Jr. has padded his Rookie of the year (hopefully) stats with 4 game HR streak and now sits at 31 on the season, my team still has the least runs scored all season :( so his 83 RBIs is a plus.

We need the sweep of NJ to have a winning rec but for the first time in 3 years i have a winnign rec against OHIO i need one win to have a wining rec at season end but with PA and OH vs me to end the year thos games could be very important in the playoff race and i have 11-9 vs OH and 9-11 vs PA so i could end the season for one team maybe.

Interesting "race" for the #1 draft pick as California & Kentucky are 61-93, and NY & Iowa are 62-92.

Inexplicably, we took 2-of-3 from Oregon so we are 8-11 against them this year. If we sweep the 4-game series that ends the season we'll win the Battle for the Branch! :)

Yeah, my team always seems to play decent toward the end of the season, just enough to cost me that #1 pick, lol.

I'll be creating a specific section on the forum for our future expansion but wanted to give everyone a quick update of where we're at and my current plans...

-currently have 1 for sure and registered owner (Paul from NPBL, NDK-Paul forum name)
-2 others have expressed interest but still need to hear back to confirm
-plan is to expand from our current 16 franchises to 20
-current owners will have first option to become an expansion team owner before our potential new owners
-goal is to expand for the 2017 season but it's looking like that it will need to wait for the 2018 season
-specifics about how the Expansion Draft will be decided once we have 4 solid new owners

I'm excited about our future and thankful for everyone that's made our first nearly 3 seasons a fun and big success! Thanks guys!

We have now 2 solid commitments for our future expansion (Paul: NDK-Paul, Frank: fhomess). I have another person who expressed interest a few weeks ago but haven't gotten a solid yes so we'll need at least 1 more owner.

As we discussed during the 2014 Winter Meetings, we're going to have our future owners become involved with league discussions/votes/etc as they feel fit to do so.

I believe that the 2018 season will likely be our first season playing with 20 teams unless the league feels that the 2017 season will be feasible which I doubt. We're getting closer to start planning our next steps in the process!

Going back through our first 3 seasons, it looks like we finish a season (beginning of Spring Training until end of the Federation Cup Series) in roughly 7-8 weeks. This would put the 2018 season at around March 2014 or so for our future owners.

Again, I'm all for going with the majority of the league's opinions. We'll discuss further during the 2015 Winter Meetings. Thanks guys!

If you have guys locked in and the current GMs are going nowhere, no reason why 2017 couldn't be the expansion year in my eyes.

4-5 months might be a long time for those waiting in the wings to wait for and they go off and join other leagues... just a thought.

Agreed if we get enough owners now even 2016 might be a possibliy because waiting for a league then another one starts up an they join it, but dont have time for this one or join this one but arnt active enough, then the search is on again for owners. I guess this is the big topic for winter mettings this year.

Like I've said before, I'd love to go with 2017 for expansion but only if we have a majority for that. I agree that the 5-6 months wait wouldn't be ideal for our future expansion team owners.

I am down with expansion whenever. Not sure how much needs to be worked out before expansion can be done - that would be my only concern.

The biggest decisions for whenever expansion happens...

-how we'll determine which players will be available during the expansion draft
-the expansion draft process (looking at past NPBL history for their expansions as a guide but not the law)
-how to realign the league with the 4 expansion teams (1 sub league no division or 2 divisions per sub league per conference, etc)
-plus whatever I've overlooking typing this

IMO there's only merits in having divisions within a sub-league if you have an unbalanced schedule where you play your division rivals more than others in the sub-league.

Seeing as AFBL is a non-financial league determining who is available during an expansion draft will likely be trickier I imagine.

I suspect you would end up with being able to protect 15-20 players on the 25 man roster plus X number from your minor leagues aged under 23 or something.

One problem with expansion currently though, there are not enough players in the universe to expand by 4 teams - there are only 177 FA's, when 4 new organizations will need a total of 500 players to fill up 25 men on each of their rosters.

I think the player number question is the key one as you can't just create new players, unless they are young ones and add them to the world for the sake of expansion (it woudl seem unrealistic to all of a sudden see 20+ 3*plus guys enter the league aged 24 or older.

I thought you didn't need to keep your minors filled there are Jim Unknowns pitching and hitting so your minors could technically be empty?

True - but if you can't get some numbers in your minors as an expansion team you are behind in both quality and quantity.

The quantity is needed to give you the best shot at having one or two guys in the minors blossom into stars.

Here are a couple of things I did during the NPBL's expansion...

1. We extended the draft by a few rounds for a few years to replenish everyone's minors.  So, if say every team loses 10 players, you add 2 rounds to the draft for 5 years.  With expansion a few seasons away, you can even do this before the expansion comes to prepare everyone for the losses, so to speak.

2. Pullbacks; if you get to protect back 2 or 3 more players every time you lose 1, it allows for more strategy and involvement than just having everybody protect X number and that's it.

Everything is updated! We have finished the 2015 regular season. Congrats to the playoff teams!

The 2015 Playoffs will begin on Monday and we'll be simming EVERY day breaking in between travel days (between G2 & G3 and G4 & G5). Be sure to trim your active roster back to 25 before Monday!

We had WV's number most of the year, and then lose the final series 1-3 in some really tight games. Sets up an intriguing playoff series against the AFBL defending champs.

Really up set that a stupid storm in Canada ruins my chance to export and i have some guy who has never started pitch agaisnt NJ and my #1 starter loses 2 out of the 3 games i lost that sim allowing 11 runs in like 8.2 innigns driving up his era which had been awesome. So Mike you win this year but in other news i swept  OHIO which i think knocked them out of the playoffs which makes me very happy because i havd a great year against them 5-3 to end they yeqar sucks cause i am Tied for 5th pick and i dont know how we wouild do a tie break? My team was 6 game better then they should have been does that mean im 5th pick :)

Second overall pick, and we avoid 100 losses in the process. There are a couple of fierce bats near the top of the draft class, even though I'm starved for young arms I can't look past a few of those guys.

We took the first game of the Battle for the Branch from Oregon to give the fans a glimmer of hope, but the Explorers stomped us the rest of the series, including 17-1 in a game where my starter Leo Garland didn't record an out, allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits (three home runs) and a walk! So, congrats to Oregon for taking the branch. But we'll get it one of these years!
