Title: 2016 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on November 12, 2013, 06:48:38 am
We are about to kick off our 4th season as a league. It'll be the final season played with 16 teams when the league expands to 20 teams in the upcoming offseason.

Will Texas be able to stay healthy and defend its crown? Will there be a 4th different Federation Cup champion? Will there be a new playoff team after the league seeing roughly same 6 teams in each postseason?

File/reports/Statslab are all updated until 3/5/2016. 1st Half of Spring Training will be tomorrow (11/13, Wed), 2nd Half of Spring Training on Friday (11/15), and then Opening Day 2016 will be Monday (11/18)

Remember that all expansion and relocation teams have to announce their teams' new info in a team press release by Monday!

Can Luis Bravo come out of Jail yet on early release? has to play with old team for one year cant be traded he wont have that long career but it would be nice if he got some career and that the team that drafted him gets to use him.

I just noticed but New Jersey (former Colorado) P Ron Pratt retired early at the age of 31. Very strange to see. He is likely the best pitcher to have retired in our 3 years as a league.

Wow - who would've seen this coming? He didn't even experience any decline, it's those bloody story lines at play.. grr ;)

Who would quit baseball to take up religious endeavours anyway?

I'll be honest - a huge loss for us losing a guy at just 31y/o who was in his prime, 18-8, 3.81 his first season with us and 14-12, 4.49 last season... I am still shocked.

Looks like our performances in ST had something to do with it 2-10 including 8 straight losses.. .another WOW.

Rookie Greg Smith's bid to steal Benjamin Barbier's job in LF just got easier, as torn ligaments in his ankle have put Barbier on the shelf for four months.

Likewise, Rhett Miller's bid to become the 5th starter has come to a crashing halt.  He's had surgery on his elbow and will miss 4 months as well.

As long as the injuries steer clear of Crawdad/Hicks/Chavez, we should be okay.

Would Bravo actually come out of retirement?  He is listed as officially retired.  Obviously I'd want him back on my team if he does return.  I blame him for the downfall of the Vipers after our wild card year in 2013.

I'm also all for voting that Ron Pratt returns after a "2 year mission" - he would only be 33 and still usable.

I still like the idea of these guys returning when we expand and being available to the expansion teams - it has a nice background story to it.

I had been thinking about this for a while and if he comes back since were expanding he can go to want ever team wants him or be on the Vipers for one full year (cant trade) or as returning player no restrictions. For NJ player a mission is a life choice so he can stay aways as long as he wants :D. We should also consider Iowas Pitcher should be able to come back in 6 years or so He would be 34 still good to finish off career

I have updated the 'League File' and 'Images Pack' links at the top right of the forum.

'League File' is a zipped folder of "AFBL.lg" folder with only the 'settings' folder and '.dat' files. This is only needed if you have to perform a fresh OOTP install and lost the AFBL league for your OOTP game. You would extract this zip into your 'saved_games\AFBL.lg' folder in your OOTP14 folder (default is in your My Documents). You will update from within the game after this initial setup.

'Images Pack' is a zipped folder of the logo folders in "AFBL.lg\news\html\images" folder. You will need to extract the files into your 'saved_games\AFBL.lg' folder in your OOTP14 folder. Updated before Opening Day each year (could do a mid season update if needed).

I have also added an 'AFBL Almanacs' section in the same area of the forum (top right). If you click that link, you'll have the option to download past AFBL year's annual almanacs. You should extract any almanacs into your "AFBL.lg\news" folder.

Remember to ALWAYS have your OOTP game closed if you do ever extract the Images Pack or Almanac into your AFBL.lg folder!

Hey, I'm starting a rookie (Greg Smith) in the outfield this year that should have a shot at winning the PL ROY.

Anyone else have any rookies they plan on starting this year?

Last year Greg Teal was a starting pitcher for me and he won rookie of the year. This year I have 2 rookie relievers, and Stan Anderson - although Anderson did have 121 at bats last season so I am not sure if he still qualifies as a rookie.

This is correct, we set a 6 man rotation for spring training so the predictions show Sepulveda only starting 27 games, when obviously we'll go back to a 5 man for the regular season.

For Ontario this is probably telling you that your AAA guys are a better bet than your ML guys ;)

50/50 on Bob Jones starting the year in the big leagues in the bullpen, he's only 19y/o but looks to be ready, he pitched 20 innings in ST and apart from giving up 5 earned runs against WV and blowing a save was pretty good throughout.

CF Rub?n S?nchez #37  2013 first round 15 overall pick

I am starting him this year is OF as well might have a shot

P Tabari Zaganos #40 2nd round 28th overall pick 2015 draft

Has a shot if he makes rotation out of spring and does ok

P Dan Hawkins #31 2013 1st round pick 6th overall

He was ok last year and he made the team out of spring but late injury may have him starting the season in the minors

Lonny Roy 1b is playing every 5th day. I can't see him winning the job and competing for ROY
Chris Neal who played 10 games for the Brewers last year should qualify but would have to win it from Middle Relief.
I think thats it from what I thought was a young team

NC and NJ are developing quite the nice little rivalry.

First there was the 3-2 Wildcard Series win for the Aviators in 2013...

Then, there was the 4-3 LCS win for the Aviators in 2015...

...both of those postseason wins came after NJ dominated NC in the regular season...

And now, very early in 2016, the teams played 30 innings of baseball over a 2 day period as neither team wanted to give an inch to the other.  On April 19th NJ won 6-3 in 18 innings and on April 20th NC won 2-1 in 12 innings.

Slow, sluggish starts are par for the course in North Carolina.

This year we're lucky to be a game over .500 after the first sim.  Good pitching is the only reason things are not much worse for my Aviators.

The only bright spots on offense are my two newcomers:

Rookie Greg Smith leads my team with a .339 average, 4 HR and 13 RBI, and trade acquisition Jesus Gutierrez is tied with Smith for the HR lead with 4.  First Baseman Rory White is the only other player who has done anything resembling hitting at the plate this year.

thats not a no no

Oops duh but why did notes say so? Ignore my silliness lol.
We're seeing a residual effect of Ellis' no-hitter last April.  I've seen this before and it's a minor bug with OOTP.  It's somewhat rare.  Each season, OOTP uses the same ID numbers for games.  Those numbers are referenced in various places in the OOTP database.  Sometimes, OOTP doesn't clear everything out properly from the previous year.

Is it the 'games_score1' or similar php file in Statslab from last year? Should I delete that from the previous season when we roll to a new calendar year?

New Jersey starts "average", however given we lost our first 3 games at home against New York we have to be happy with a 9-7 sim.

This included winning 3 from 3 against West Virginia, and 2 from 3 against North Carolina, definitely two of the teams who be vying for the playoffs this year.

Performance wise Josh Talley hit for the cycle, but our starters gave up too many runs despite our hitters and bullpen performing relatively well.

Taking a look at the PL this year it looks to be one of the tightest ever with perennial poor performers Kentucky and New York starting to see the fruits of their farm system. It's going to be another great season!

An 8-8 start for Illinois. Looks like the struggles in 1 run games continues into 2016, 1-3 thus far.

Tough going in the middle/setup relief roles through this first 10% of the year. We need to shore this area up and not blow so many leads.

 A nagging injury to 2015 star Gonzales might prove costly as he is out for 2 weeks. Hopefully the Piasa can weather the storm and stay close until he recovers.

Now if Duke Energy can get my power back up things will be looking up...

A 5-10 start was not what Arizona was looking for.  >:(  Especially the 0-6 to start the season.  :o Rebounding in the 2nd half of the sim going 5-4 did show some promise.  :D
The primary issue has been the bullpen with 7 of the 10 losses coming from the pen and 4 of those on one reliever.  >:( Arizona is going to revamp their bullpen bringing up 5 pitchers from AAA and seeing if the upside can translate immediately.  ;D Arizona has been disappointed at first base but will give Joe Hunter another chance to start, edging out backup C/1B Dan Swain who still wants traded due to lack of playing time. Joe Hunter is batting .286, his highest career Batting average. It will be interesting if he can have power and average over the next sim.
Arizona is also trying to find 6 more spots for up and coming bats they want to have off the bench. Trades may be coming.
The Minor league system fell to #2 after many of that #1 system finding their way into the Majors or parts of trades to solidify the rotation.

This particular issue comes from pitching_game_stats, but you certainly don't want old SQL files hanging around and getting reimported.

Min Minoprs lost the #1 prospect to the Major team so now we fell hard but the trades and future picks look good, I got 2 picks this years first round, and a 5-10 start measn that i might trade away some people but idk I hate losing, Supriing to note tho my Catcher has 3 HR in 8 games and the 41 year old only hit 4 last year

I just spotted this and completely agree that a rivalry is starting to develop, I'll have to add NC to the list of rivals along with NY and the self proclaimed rival, Ontario ;)

It was in the League Announcement but remember that this year the AFBL Ammy Draft moves to 8 rounds with 11 round generated in 2016 & 2017, 7 rounds with 10 generated in 2018 & 2019, and then back to 7 rounds with 9 rounds generated in 2020 and beyond.

Used the almanacs that matt put up for downlaod, each one has the season's win/loss against each team - the "Team v Team" report - then just had to manually calculate.

File/reports have been updated. Statslab updates are in progress. 2nd May sim is Monday!

~~~
I did have to scratch our plans for our College and High School feeder leagues for this season. In extra testing, I found that the players in the feeder leagues were getting stats for 2013 instead of 2016 and also not accumulating stats while either in HS or COL.
So we'll use the previous method for the 2016 Amateur Draft Pool generation and then implement our feeder leagues with the same settings for the 2017 season and beyond. This time creating the feeder leagues on Jan 1 in the game instead of during Spring Training which is what happened.
Sorry about that guys! I'm just glad I caught my mistake early before we were all disappointed.
7-3 sim was a great result, including a 3-0 sweep of West Virginia and a split series 2-2 against Pennsylvania who I expect to be up there challenging this season.
Tim Mayfield was the star for us this sim hitting .375 with 3 home runs.
The Patriot League is looking really tough this year. NC, NJ, WV, Pennsy and Ohio all have rosters capable of making the playoffs.
Matt - something not right with statslab - some guys are having their results doubled for "last sim stats"
http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/statslab/StatsLab/simstats.php?team_id=T80&who=both&scope=Season&frDay=1%2F1&toDay=05%2F11&opp_id=All - Sepulveda shows a record of 10-2 (I wish) whiel Talley and Nielsen show 60+ games played... lol
Don't forget to vote for Greg for ROY when the season ends...   ;)
PL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Sunday, May 1st, 2016
Youngster Greg Smith emerged as the latest Patriot League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from North Carolina deserved the honor, batting .366 with 6 home runs and 23 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Smith enjoy the limelight.
Also note that you should update your OOTP14 to the latest released patch if not done already!
Just keeping Greg Smith on everyone's minds so you'll remember him when awards voting comes around. 8)
Rookie of the year... Rookie of the year... Rookie of the year...
Athletics Chill Smith's Hot Streak
Wednesday, May 18th, 2016
Greg Smith, left fielder for the North Carolina Aviators, gave it a good try, but his day in history finally came to an end, when he went hitless in 3 tries against the New Jersey Athletics. Not only had they stopped his 21-game hitting streak, they had beaten North Carolina 3-0, too.
Speaking with the media after the game, Smith said, "Now that the streak has ended, I admit I will breathe a bit easier the next time I step up to bat. It was tough because I put a little pressure on myself. Now that it's over, I will definitely be a little bit looser at the plate."
So far this year in 40 games Smith is hitting .354 with 12 home runs, 43 RBIs and 28 runs scored.
Player photos update... I ran the 'Force Update / Generate Player Pictures' function but it did not resolve some of the incorrect player images.
So I am currently in the process of 'Generate New Player Pictures' to start fresh with the photos. This will have to fix the wackiness. Not sure what happened but I'm guessing things got messed up when I purged the database of old files/teams/players/etc.
Today's sim is coming but is running behind due to the flurry of deals before today :).
Hey Indiana,
Your minor league pitchers are jerk faces!
League Suspends Bryan and Caldwell for Fisticuffs
Wednesday, June 15th, 2016
The shenanigans between the Las Vegas Gamblers and Indianapolis Indians will leave them a little short-handed for a few games. The Gamblers Alan Bryan and the Indians Mike Caldwell were suspended by the league for 2 games following the on-field battle this week at Gamblers Ballpark.
For the season Bryan has produced 41 hits in 156 at-bats for a .263 average with 7 home runs and gotten on base at a .482 clip.
This season Caldwell has registered 3 wins and 4 losses in 14 starts with a 7.35 ERA.
To qualify each player has to meet a specific criteria, for hitters it's a minimum number of at bats - Mendoza unfortunately didn't qualify I'd assume.
When voting for Rookie of the Year. Vote Glen Hanson!
FL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Friday, July 1st, 2016
Arizona's Glen Hanson collected 32 hits to snare the Frontier League Rookie of the Month for June.
He batted .294 with 5 home runs, 20 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
The 21-year-old is barely old enough to shave, but he could definitely contend for Rookie of the Year if he keeps up this pace.
Hanson is batting .294 this season in 27 games with 5 home runs, 20 RBIs and 18 runs scored. He has 32 hits in 109 at-bats.
North Carolina seems to be stuck in the doldrums.
Not sure why; in the month of June we outscored our opponents by 32 runs (in 27 games) yet were just 15-12.  A team average of .271 and a team ERA of 3.21 over that stretch should lead to a better record.  I guess we're just blowing teams out we win but playing them close when we lose.
Something that I noticed was I have players that are ready for "short season A." IS there any consideration to a low A/High A situation. Matthew could set the new level as Short Season A but make it the same length as regular A.
is this simply not possible right now?
Nope we have 4 levels of minors and will keep it that way.
I've never noticed this before, but this year the All-Star game cost me two starts by my top starters.  My 5th starter started the game right before the ASG, and then my #1 and 2 starters each pitched 2 innings during the midsummer classic.  When regular season games resumed, my 3rd, 4th and 5th starters pitched the next 3 games.  This is with 'start highest rested' selected.  Weird.
Whoa strange... I always thought that the ASG really didn't have an effect on the regular season. Maybe a new thing in OOTP14?
10 All Star for NJ, not a bad effort, but really disappointed not to see Josh Talley get voted in after winning 2 Batter of the Month awards this year. I guess he has likely been poor the other months.
We manage to maintain a 7 game lead as well after a great 6-1 sim including completing a 3-1 series win over rivals West Virginia and sweeping neighbours New York in a 3 game series.
Our bats have been a bit cold of late, but our bullpen continues to mow down the opposition with 4 players with a WHIP under 0.90 and all bullpen arms, except Stan Craft, with an ERA below 2.00.
Has always happened since OOTP 7-8 I a prety sure I don't really remember 6.5 to well but with the 7 day line ups the All-star game gave your pitcher a tired rating that you can only avoid by suspended them for the game or you let them play but move them around in your line up.
Now Hammond injured. Not been a healthy season for Illinois.
The next owner will have a new second baseman Zac Chambers who is tearing up AAA, but at age 19 will have to finish the year in the minors. Oringally drafted as a 3B, he is making an excellent transition to 2B. His defense ranking is up to 4 since the starting the season at 1.
The main positive in the 2016 season has been the continued excellence of Doug Wallace.
but the worst, tim francis retires at the age of 20 years ... I dont know what to say. Texas is a joke and the game are playing with us or something. The last year all the team injuried and this year that we have only a few problems with that, one guy retires with only 20 years. And we are not talking about a regular guy ...
Crazy news sim for AFBL...
Francis to Donate Kidney to Ailing Sister
Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016
Texas second baseman Tim Francis has decided to retire from baseball in order to donate a kidney to his sister. Doctors say Francis's sister, who has advanced kidney disease, probably won't survive without a new organ. "As much as I love the game of baseball, I love my sister more," said Francis. "I'm just doing what I would hope someone would do for me if I needed it."
Jorge Rosado had nothing but praise for his teammate. "Tim is such an incredible guy. To walk away from all of this to help someone he cares about just shows how much class he has." His manager, Tom Roberts, was equally impressed with Francis's generosity. "It takes a lot of character to make a sacrifice like that. We wish him and his sister all the best and we'll definitely be praying for their speedy recovery."
New Jersey Athletics Owner Dies
Thursday, August 11th, 2016
The New Jersey Athletics announced today that team owner Paco Vel?squez had died today of natural causes. A team spokesman told reporters that funeral arrangements were undecided at this time. It was expected that Vel?squez's son would succeed him as owner. Paco Vel?squez Jr. has been deeply involved in the club's operation in recent years and the transfer of ownership should run smoothly. Fiscally, Vel?squez Jr. is said to be economizer and demanding in character.
A great 7-2 sim but we lost starting pitcher Bob Peters for the season. He was having a great year too going 14-3 with a 3.07 ERA after being acquired from neighbours NY.
We stretched our lead to 8 games over West Virginia despite losing the series 2-1 to them this sim.
Some quick notes in a year of transition for California/Maryland:
21-year old LF Liam Meadows, who was acquired from New Jersey in the Bryon Newbold trade back in the 2013 off-season, has broken through with the Golden Eagles this season, hitting .253/.290/.487 with 22 home runs and 53 RBI. While he's also struck out a brutal 109 times (against 19 walks in 359 at-bats), he's playing competent defense mainly in center field this year. He has a long way to go to be a consistent contributor, but he was acquired for his power bat on a club that has lacked power since its inception and he's leading the club in home runs. Meadows is 7 home runs away from tying Mike Brown's club record of 29.
31-year old Mike Brown, who came into the 2016 season with two Frontier League Best Defender Awards at catcher (2013 & 2015), was unceremoniously converted to first base this season after the club took catcher Willie Patton with the second overall pick in the 2015 draft. Brown had never played the position before, but his proficiency at first base has increased as the season has gone along. I just had to keep his bat in the lineup somehow.
Good sim, but now SS Jackson and CF Sackett hurt. So this season the Piasa have lost see the following position players go on DL:
1B: Thomas
2B: White
3B: Gonzalez
SS: Jackson
LF: Hammond
CF: Sackett
What a season. 60-62 at this point so we are playing hard and hanging tough. There is no quit in this team despite us having no playoff hopes at this time.
File and reports are updated! We have reached September.
Our 2016 Ammy Draft Pool has been released but remember that our HS and COL feeder leagues were postponed until next season. This draft pool was manually created by myself since our game still thinks we use feeder leagues. I created 176 players (11 rounds worth of talent) with a good balance of potential, age, and development.
Statslab will be updated soon.
A solid 6-4 sim, but WV went 8-1 or 9-1 to close the gap to 5 ... looks like it's going to be a great race to the #1 spot in the PL.
And may I say, some true quality in the draft class this year from my first glance. Will make up for a few of the guys the existing teams lose to the expansion draft.
Title: Re: 2016 Discussion Thread
Draft pool has been imported into Statslab. I'll update the order to what it would look like if the draft was held today but keep in mind that this won't be the final order. We can begin the draft as soon as the regular season ends for teams not in the playoffs.
And may I say, some true quality in the draft class this year from my first glance. Will make up for a few of the guys the existing teams lose to the expansion draft.
Yeah I agree although it was manually generated in waves by myself. The game didn't auto generate since it thought we were still using feeder leagues. I'm pleased with how I did in generating the 176 players in terms of quality, development, age, etc. I also had the expansion draft in mind when randomly creating the players today.
Well crap. I just checked on remotely connecting to my laptop back in KC with my OOTP14 from STL and apparently my router needs a reboot.
So that being said, we might be on a break until I get back home on Monday afternoon/evening unless I can talk my mother-in-law through power cycling my modem and router /shudders/ haha.
Sorry guys. I hope everyone is having a good holiday! We'll finish up the 2016 regular season when we can so we can get through the upcoming longer than usual offseason with the Ammy Draft, Expansion Draft, and then the FA Draft for the expansion teams. Thanks!
Division clinched for NJ!! Finally we will top the standings at the end of the regular season, now to find some playoff form.
In some interesting side stats, Maddox Hynes has saved 42 straight games and needs just 2 more saves to tie the longest streak in AFBL history. His last blown save was against Ohio on May 1st, and our last three games this season are against Ohio of course.
Josh Talley can also enter the NJ record books by scoring 4 more times and gaining 4 more hits to be the all time NJ leader in both categories.
We have concluded the 2016 regular season. File & reports are updated. Statslab will be up soon.
We will begin the Wildcard Series tomorrow (Friday) with Games 1 and 2 as the top wildcard seeds host the lower wildcard seeds.
Don't forget to vote for the season awards in Statslab!
We will begin the Ammy Draft later today once I can finalize the draft order and make the adjustments to reflect that in Statslab.
Your Expansion Draft Protection Lists are due on MONDAY, January 6th!
~~
UPDATE: Statslab has been updated
Bugger!!
Jorge Sepulveda pitched just 4 innings and got belted for 7 runs against Ohio in his last start of the season, that meant that he missed out on a third PL Triple Crown by 0.03 on his ERA :(
That stinks!
I forgot to switch my rotation to a 6-man staff and accidently started ace SP Jon Givens on the last game. Now hopefully that doesn't hurt Colorado against Oregon in the Wildcard Series.
