Title: 2017 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on January 24, 2014, 04:36:14 pm
We have finally finished our longer and unique offseason to reach the beginning of Spring Training 2017! I appreciate everyone's patience through the offseason as we saw the league grow from 16 franchises to 20 franchises.

The 2017 season will be our 5th season as a league and I'm so excited about this season and the seasons to come. The AFBL will be a different looking league as it has added 4 expansion teams and had 2 teams relocate. The league moves from two leagues of two 10-team divisions to two leagues of two divisions of 5-teams.

We will also celebrate our 5th season with a single-season of interleague play.

AFBL also implements their High School and College feeder leagues as their Amateur Draft Pool fillers. The league also will begin this season starting on Opening Day 2017, minor league level roster size maximum limits. Any necessary cuts need to be made by Opening Day!

Do we get Ron Pratt back after he's completed his 2 year mormon mission? ;)

I have the HTML Reports and Statslab updated.

Things are not quite 100% with the website and everything but we're close to back to normal. My apologies for the slowness and any timeouts this afternoon/evening.

We'll begin Spring Training on Monday at 6am CT!

I had Pete (GA) tell me this. I'll upload a new one. I'm guessing the update file on the server is corrupted or partial during all the fun yesterday. Sorry guys!

New downloads for the League File and Images Pack have been uploaded to the website if you need them.

The League File download is for anyone who needs to start fresh for our league on their computer.

The Images Pack includes all the logos and such including all the new franchises and relocation teams.

Don't forget to make any promotions/demotions/releases to any minor league levels by Opening Day 2017 which will be two Mondays from today on February 3rd.

Thanks guys!

I think since we are dropping this max roster on folks with little notice the other side should happen too... No more ghost positions. If the whole point is getting these guys used then everyone should be using guys to make them better

Also I would like it wrote in that rules must have 1 season before they are put into effect without unanimous approval.

Nope sorry. We're going to keep the ghost players option.

I'll be sure to give more notice for any further rule changes.

Why? We are supposed to be making sure more players get an opportunity. GMs should be forced to do so....

I'm not worried about teams having a small amount of players in each level. That's not a problem for me. Sorry.

THen again I ask why is having a large number a problem for anyone but the owner who has it? I am trying to make the point but obviously as you said it doesnt affect you so you don't care. So since the rule only affects me and the effort I have put in it's not as important. I am truly done on this argument and I am sure I come off whiny but I dont really care because it is a misjustice in the league and is really frustrating to me, an owner who has tried very hard to be very active and rebuild after a few seasons of inactivity. I find it very frustrating that a rule was set that, intentionally or not, hurts an owner and didn't give that owner a chance to do anything about it and all defense of it was brushed off.

I see advantage for the people who is claiming free agents all the days and that rule doesnt allow that, at least sets a limit
Title: Re: 2017 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on January 30, 2014, 07:46:59 am
The rule is to protect the league and the other teams as well as keeping the movement of players. There is no value or point of keeping more than 25-35 players in any level. I'm sorry.

IMO the difference is that loading up on players affects other teams who then are facing a shallow FA pool, while using ghost players does not negatively affect other teams.

I really think this season is fine to implement the max roster size rule but we will postpone the implementation of the rule until Opening Day 2018. Please plan accordingly and begin to trim your rosters by then.

Hmm I'll avoid uploading a new file to avoid confusion. If needed, check the box scores using the HTML Reports or Statslab. Sorry about that guys. I think the extra days after the end of STuntil Opening Day is the reason for the first 2 games of the 2nd half to not be included.

5-2 a good start and exactly the type of start I wanted. Garlez was solid at 1B while Josh Talley was a monster with the bat.

It's only early days, but great to see all expansion teams getting their first wins, well done!

No worries. I did have to CPU your organization to get your ML roster to 25. Sorry if that screwed anything up.

I did the same for the handful of teams that were over the 25 limit as well if anyone was wondering.

No. The lineup and staff looked good. It was my fault. I usually set pitch count limits for ST so those were still in effect. None of my starters went longer than 50 pitches. Again, my dumb move!

I don't think we'll have to re-sim. My game seems fine. I just created a new League File download. Try deleting your AFBL.lg folder and downloading the new League File (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/AFBL.lg.zip (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/AFBL.lg.zip)).

Post by: mstreeter06 on February 05, 2014, 09:43:23 am
Okay we have things sorted out.

If anyone sees weirdness with their game file... please close your game and then delete the 'AFBL.lg' folder from your 'saved_games' folder in your OOTP14 folder on  your computer.

Then download the League File at the top of the forum or here (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/AFBL.lg.zip).

Then download the Images Pack at the top of the forum as well or here (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/AFBLimages.zip). Then extract into your 'AFBL.lg' folder. This should keep the 'AFBL.lg\news\html\images' folder structure.

If you're missing box scores or player histories, then try this...
-Download and then extract this ("AFBL.lg\messages" folder) into the main 'AFBL.lg' folder: afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/messages.zip (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/messages.zip)
-Download and extract this ("AFBL.lg\news\txt" folder) into the 'AFBL.lg\news' folder: afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/txt.zip (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/txt.zip)
-Download and extract this ("AFBL.lg\news\html\box_scores and game_logs" folders) into the 'AFBL.lg\news\html' folder: afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/html.zip (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/html.zip)

Sorry to cause any panic and confusion this morning with those who experienced the wackiness. Thanks guys!

I am shocked - I know this fantasy won't last forever, but for an expansion team to be 15-9 is a bit funny to me. I am 25% of the way towards my first season goal... I am waiting for the 0-10 sim, I know it is coming...but I am going to enjoy the ride while it lasts...

i WISH I could take that first sim of 1-6 out. Outside of that, this team has not sucked. Be interesting to see how this team is after this 12 game road trip. Granted my team has been better on the road than at home.

Wahoo and double woot!!!! Best sim ever (which can only mean some sort of file corruption  ;D ) .... 8 and 1???? That was a good month's worth of wins for me the past couple of seasons.  Pitchers were all on fire - only allowed 5 runs all week with 5 shut outs, only a home run allowed in the 8th inning kept me from a perfect week.

And I'll repeat it for max effect.. swept 3-0 twice, and could only go 1-1 versus an expansion team.

Worst sim... EVER!!!!

OMG 7-3 sim i havent had one of those since just before my 19 game losing streak in 2014.

On the pluse side i beat NJ 2-3 and kicked his best pitcher for the 2nd time this season :) all i need now is to have my catchers playing well and im golden. My back up first base man also had 7 rbis in a game like wow his best game since 2013

We just can't get it done at the moment, 5-5, and a 2-1 series loss to Ontario that lets them jump ahead of us in the standings, ouch!

It looks like either our rotation is pitching terribly or the opposition has worked out how to hit us, seeing Sepulveda with an ERA north of 4.00 is a major concern. Add to this a group of hitters (except Josh Talley) who have started cold and we're struggling at the moment.

In other news, Maddox Hynes failed in his bid to reach 50 straight saves, falling agonizingly short at 48 after getting pounded by Illinois int he 9th inning, we did go on to win this game though.

On the inter-league front we went 4-3 on the sim.. small consolation I guess.

If we don't fix up where we're going I am seriously considering trading away either or both of Ignacio Garlez and Jeff Fowler - both great left handed hitters (would work excellently at Indiana or Illinois :)).

You're telling me, Sepulveda out for the season (9-10 months) will likely stop him from becoming the first pitcher to 100 wins, not to mention breaking his All Star appearance streak.

At least we're back leading the division, but our other pitchers will really have to stand up now.

Yes only 1 vote per team. I take the top 2 vote getters for each position, 6-7 starters, and 6-7 relievers. Sadly the game decides who starts though. I don't think it's an option for me to override it.

ASG voting deadline would be the night/early morning before the sim that includes the ASG. I'll be sure to have a deadline posted.

Trade deadline is July 31st. We'll stop the sim at July 30th to allow an extra few days for last season negotiations.

Finding it tough in NJ, we had what I considered to be the 'easiest sim' in a long time 8 games against Iowa, NY, New Mexico and Georgia - we went 3-5 in these games plus went 0-2 against Oregon and lost both Garlez and Geboyan to injuries for 5 and 4 weeks respectively.

The only shining light is Tim Mayfield who upped his game significantly and put up some decent numbers.

Where we are struggling compared to previous seasons is in our rotation - 7th worst ERA (4.36) in the Patriot League. Yes we've lost Sepulveda for the season, but even he was having an off year.

Time to get out of this funk as we're right back in the pack with only 1 game separating the top 4 teams in the PL North it's proving to be the most competitive division in the AFBL.

Next up are 6 games against expansion teams, surely we can get back to winning ways there.

You probably need to either try downloading the League File link from the top of the site and extract over your current AFBL.lg folder or if that doesn't work, start completely fresh. Sorry about that!

I'll activate Powers off the DL if needed for you.

A 5-5 sim for Washington has our fans VERY confused.  We have never had a week where we won as many as we lost.  Our current 4 game win streak has our fans dreaming of having a better record than Virginia this year!

Two notable performances.  Ivan Garza has a 6.33 ERA on the year, and that includes out dueling Ned Haas en route to a no-decision in a game we would beat Oregon 1-0 in the bottom of the 12th.  CF Sam Lambert hit 3 home runs against Idaho, the second player this year to do that.  Lambert doubled his seasonal home run output in that one game.

Another reminder to vote for the All-Star Game in Statslab!
For those of you who've already cast your votes, Matt and I decided to expand the criteria a bit for batters such that more players qualify to appear on the ballot.  You may want to go back and review as some of the players that were previously not on the ballot due to playing time, like Indiana catcher Rob Hodge, are worthy of consideration now.

Voting as always is optional but always encouraged :). Here is who I don't have any votes cast yet for the All-Star Game. You have until Wednesday morning at 6am CT. Voting is done in Statslab and you can vote for just your league or both or whatever. There more votes the better as it will help in determine the non-top-vote-getters that get selected as reverses by me.

Rob (North Carolina)
Stefin (West Virginia)
David (Iowa)
Stephen (Maryland)
Pete (Georgia)
Michael (Kentucky)
Elliott (Oregon)
Joel (New York)
Raymond (Illinois)
Jonathan (Ontario)
Steve (Virginia)
Harry (Ohio)

Thanks!

Don't forget to vote for the NJ bullpen guys (Benton, Newbold, Hynes and Jones) they are the best bullpen in the league by far.

The NJ bullpen is nearly a 1 full run better than any other bullpen in the AFBL with a combined 1.85 ERA - pity our starters aren't up to the level expected this year.

Voted.

So, Don Wilson, one of my starting pitchers, is 12 for 29 (.414) with 2 2B and 3 HR this season.  He's got pretty good batting ratings (all 7's and 6's) but I think I'll keep him on the mound for now, even though he's just 31-39, 4.46 in 101 career starts.

We continue our winning sims after that little blip a few in-game weeks back, yet we still can't shake Ohio and Ontario, although Pennsy looks to be dropping out of the running.

Finally Tim Houston has stepped up and is pitching like he should, good to see him get some decent wins under his belt.

Our 2nd July sim has been ran which includes the All-Star Game.

I screwed up and deleted the event that allows me to manually enter the All-Star Game selections so the game decided to was picked. It did a good job for the most part with only a few omissions from the Statslab voting. My apologies guys!

I did figure out how to chose the ASG starters though so I chose the selected starters in Statslab that were available from the CPU selections. I also decided to use the DH for the ASG as well.

New file is up, reports are extracting, and Statslab is on the way.

I wondered how I got 3 all stars. I think Quirk was probably deserving and I suppose you could make a case for Edwards (10 wins on expansion team with a 3 ERA - although Baca has out pitched him on my squad) but Jones was a curious selection. He is having a good year, but there are plenty of better relievers out there. But it is good for the team morale  ;D

5-2 sim for NC, but it came at a cost.

Big Boots Thompson, who was enjoying the best season of his career with an 11-1 record through his first 18 starts, ruptured a tendon in his finger in his 19th start, and will miss 4 months.

I'm going to need to have somebody to step it up and fill his shoes boots.

Does anyone know where can I see who made the all star rosters (in game or Statslab)? It's usually in the managers inbox a list of both teams but I don't see that. I want to see if any players made the team that are not in the box score, who made the team but didn't play in the game.

I can put something together with who was selected by the CPU. Sorry about that guys!

Typically I'll manually select the top 2 vote getters for each position and 6-7 starters and relievers. I'll add additional players to replace injured top vote getters as well.

I went to my team (in the game), reports and chose news log and it listed the three guys who made the all star team. Same screen in stats lab, Team, homepage and click on news.

He's been hovering around this mark the last two sims.  He's down from the first two months where he was near .415 at one point.

His problem is he has next to no power and does not hit home runs at all.  In fact, rarely does he get RBI.

However, he's obviously been a beast at getting on base and allowing Al Fuller to drive him in nearly every game.  It's going to be a blast watching this guy over the next several years to see if he can indeed replicate his rookie year.

Tommy Carr is up to .409 after a fantastic sim.  The Vipers also lost arguably the best closer in the league, Willie Watson, for the season.  He led the league in saves at the time of injury for the 2nd straight season and held the 2nd best bullpen ERA.

Also, Luis Bravo took home rookie of the month and that probably shouldn't be happening.

Exciting about Tommy Carr keeping in historic pace up especially as a 20-year-old. Just incredible.

Bob Thompson got his revenge for you leaving him available in the expansion draft.

I guess the FL is much tougher than the PL!

I thought it was funny that after going 2-7 and gaining a game on New Mexico in the standings, we go 5-5 and drop 3 to them.  Very odd.  We've actually played close to .400 ball since opening the season with a dismal stretch.  That's not terrible for a first year club reliant upon other teams' castoffs.  We've been pitching a lot better since trading Freddie Taylor to Pennsylvania, which is odd because Taylor has been tremendous for them, too!  He's 6-1 with an ERA under 2 and a 0.76 WHIP.

8-2 including sweeps over Colorado (in Colorado) and WV in NM. That last trade seemed to really snap this team into gear. It'd be nice to finish strong and actually have something to build on.

We have finished August and enter the final month of the regular season!

Our 2017 Amateur Draft Pool has been released with players that have graduated our feeder leagues (reached the max age limit) so check that out to begin scouting for the draft which is held after the season in November.

Our major league rosters size limits have expanded to 40 for the month of September as well if you want to call up extra players.

The new file is up, reports are extracting, and Statslab is on the way.

Thank god August is over. A below .500 record and another injury (Jeff Fowler this time) and 6 straight losses to end the month.

We've had 4 or 5 of our top 5 players out during the month of August and it showed, we're just lucky to escape with a lead over Ohio.

While we'll likely fall into the playoffs, our current form means a round 1 exit is most likely on the cards.

Excellent sim for Idaho. After a horrible stretch that saw us play 24-47, we snapped out of it and went 8-2. With 18 games left, we are hoping play .500 or better and finish with 70+ wins.

20-year-old Indiana OF Tommy Carr is still hitting everything in his sights and currently has a .398 average entering September. Will he be able to keep up the pace and push his average over .400?

Here's what Statslab says he needs to do to get to .400...

Nope... Carr already has enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title.  It's 3.1 PA per team game, or 501 over a 162 game season, and he's at 504.  Those 66 walks and 11 HBP are nothing to sneeze at.  Good thing this guy is already in his late 30's and won't be hitting like this much longer.  What?  He didn't turn 20 till the middle of July?!?!  %$&%!!!

I guess the one nice thing for opposing pitchers is that despite blazing speed, he has no clue what to do once he's on base.  Otherwise, he could steal 100 bases easy.

Leon was 2-0 and pitched a shutout in one of his starts....  My team was 6-0 today when my top 3 pitchers pitched, and 0-4 when the 4 and 5 guys started...  Built for the playoffs, we are.
Wow... Leon hasn't lost a game since April.

As for us, we had a .400 sim which inched us a little in the right direction.  I'm excited about the chance to give Dax Rutherford some playing time in September, but a bit bummed that I lost two of my starting outfielders in the past week.  Elvis Lowe and Alvin Kane both had good weeks, hitting over .300 with 4 home runs each.

Grr... Josh Talley now out injured... we've lost Sepulveda, Geboyan, Fowler and Talley for the rest of the regular season. We might get Talley and Fowler back during the playoffs if we're lucky.

We had the great result of 2 wins from 2 against WV, but were swept by Georgia - the expansion teams are really getting us this year.

Still clinging on to 1st place but Ohio are chasing us down. We play each other in a  final 3 game series next sim which may decide the division.

We are approaching the final 3 weeks of the 2017 regular season. It has been a great year with the first season of 20 teams along with interleague play for the first time. We are currently scheduled to return back to no-interleague play for the 2018 season but I plan on holding a vote this offseason during the 2017 Winter Meetings. Also don't forget that we'll add the maximum roster size limit rule beginning on Opening Day 2018 so make plans for that!

Currently Colorado (FL West), Indiana (FL East), and Texas & Illinois (FL Wildcards) would be the 4 FL playoff teams. New Jersey (PL North), West Virginia (PL South), and North Carolina & Ohio (PL Wildcards) would represent the PL playoff picture. Will Kentucky (2 GB), Oregon (4 GB), or Idaho (14 GB) be able to challenge Illinois for that final wildcard in the FL? Will expansion Georgia (5 GB), Pennsylvania (13 GB), or Ontario (14 GB) get red-hot to catch Ohio for the final wildcard in the PL?

Limping to the playoffs, thankfully we beat Ohio 2-1 in our series, but they still managed to gain a game on us as we could only go 5-5.

A 1 game lead with 10 games to go is not the position we envisaged we'd be in. Oh well, we'll keep on fighting.

Dax Taylor did become the first Athletic to hit 3 home runs in a game, as he managed the feat in a win over New Mexico.

Tommy Carr's average has dropped to .378.

Indiana currently holds a 3 game lead on Texas for the division title, but they play each other in the final sim.  Furthermore, Illinois has to play Indiana, Texas and Kentucky.  That could propel them into good playoff positioning or put them completely out of the wild card spots.

Here is how the playoff picture currently is set going into our final sim...

FL
1. Indiana vs 4. Illinois
2. Colorado vs 3. Texas

In the hunt for the final Wildcard: Kentucky (2 GB), Oregon (6 GB)

Indiana has a 4 game lead over Colorado for the 1-seed. Texas has a 4 game lead over Illinois for the 3-seed (top wildcard).

PL
1. West Virginia vs 4. Ohio
2. New Jersey vs. 3. North Carolina

In the hunt for the final wildcard: Georgia (7 GB)

West Virginia has 20 game lead over New Jersey for the 1-seed. New Jersey holds a slim 1 game lead over Ohio in the PL North. North Carolina has a 8 game lead over Ohio for the 3-seed (top wildcard).

Good luck in the WC round.

In true Philadelphia 76ers fashion, the Idaho Steelheads dropped their last five of the regular season, presumably to improve their draft position.

FYI to everyone, I am travelling the next two weeks, but the next 5 or 6 days are family vacation and I won't be on line much. I apologize if this slows the draft down, I will do my best to make my picks in a timely manner. THe following week is a business trip, so I will be around most of the time.

Hey guys! Busy morning so far.

We'll do games 1 and 2 in the first sim. We'll break a sim when we get to an off-day (off-days on travel days).

We'll start simming soon. Playoffs coming up!

Olympia won the AAA title!  We actually have something to be happy about this year.  I wasn't expecting that at all.

Now the bad news... we choked down the stretch going 1-9.  Four of those losses were of the 1-run variety.  Perhaps most disappointing was dropping below a .350 win percentage by losing our final 6 games.  We only needed two more wins to stay there.  Alvin Kane and Elvis Lowe both finished strong, and prospect Dax Rutherford had a nice week as well.

Hmm I think the database cleanup in the past screwed that up too (along with my own screw up 1 year simming too long). The correct award winners are in the Awards section of the forum.

Yeah, when you did one of those clean-ups it condensed everything but it also reissued the player id #'s... so what you see in the statslab are the players that are now associated with those ID's.  It's the same reason all the pictures got mixed up.

Correct award winners are also found here: http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/reports/news/html/history/league_100_awards.html

Yeah still mad at myself for doing that. Grr.

Some of the awards shown in the game and the reports are actually wrong as well due to me simming too far. Oops.

You might want to cross reference with the forum Awards thread to be really sure who was the real winners. I wish there was a way to go back and edit the Awards in the game...

I believe the database cleanup tool would generate a file of all the  player ID changes.  If you still have that, I can write something to fix the voting history.  I did that for one other league once.

Question, perhaps ignorance on my part, we finished with the same record as Virginia and were 10-8 against them this season but finished behind them in the standings. What is the tiebreaker? Thanks!

Not sure how the game decides to place the tied teams in the standings. As for the draft order, when teams have the same record I go to H2H record.

I dont use usually the "ask AI to setup the minor teams" but I just saw that just after use it, I have 2 or 3 pitchers in the AAA and AA teams and the rotation is set on "5 man rotation". how can it be? And looking the lineups, spots without players ... wtf

We have the 'ghost players' option enabled which allow teams to not have a full minor league level roster. Hopefully this answers your question :).

I think there is a middle ground between keeping your minor league levels completely full and having some empty spots that are filled with ghost players. I'm sure everyone has their own opinion. Some might say it helps to have fewer in their minors to allow the real players to develop but some might like having a full level of real players to get a good feel of who is ready for the next level. To answer your question, I don't really know. For me, I like to try to have an almost full level but it's not the end of the world if not.
