Idaho 2027 Season Thread
« on: October 13, 2015, 12:58:27 pm »
The 2026 season finished with a real positive feeling for Idaho. A team record 80 wins and over 2M attendance for the first time. Young talent has bubbled to the AFBL level and is starting to flourish.

Batting

1B McKinney hit 28HR and drove in 90.
2B Parks ended the season on fire, with 23 hits in his last 11 games.
SS - Dobson turned in a huge 30HR/46 SB, 107 RBI season.
3B Allen hit 20 HR and continues to develop his power and defense.
LF Pegas won a best defender award and led the FL in steals with 52.
RF Hernandez hit .313 as a 20 year old in 256 at bats. He also stole 28 bases.
In CF, veteran and one time batting champ Klebel is giving way to 22 year old Pelletier. Klebel will serve as DH this season as he tries to reach 1000 career hits (sitting on 992).
Hopefully C Dan Dixon is over his ruptured finger tendon and can continue to be a major defensive presence behind the plate. He threw out over 40% of potential base stealers last season in 107 games. His backup will probably be one time starter Alex Perry.

The projected lineup:

RF - Jesus Hernandez
LF - David Pegas
SS - Loren Dobson
1B - Mike McKinney
3B - Brad Allen
2B - Mal Parks
C - Dan Dixon
DH - Bingham Klebel
CF - Dan Pelletier

Pitching

The pitching staff is lead by Zach Anderson. He has 80 career wins and is coming off a 19 win campaign. He is followed by young veteran Jim Fish, who posted a 4.6 WAR in 2026. Steady Jim O'Brien will be the #3 starter. He has won 10+ games every year in a Steelhead uniform and looks to extend that streak. Farias and Vic Taylor look to round up the starting 5. Farias started 24 games, completing 3, but suffered an injury that prematurely ended his season. Taylor, now a full season removed from a torn flexor tendon looks to try and reach his potential.

Waiting in the wings should injuries hit is Cesar Hernandez who split duties between starting and bullpen in 2026. PJ Gilmore, Doug O'Brien, Jim Smith, and Hal Joe wait in the wings for their turn. Expect Dan Butler to close, a job he did so well in 2026. Plenty of bullpen spots up for grabs on the 2027 squad, as the pen struggled, especially in middle/long relief.

On The Farm

Currently the Idaho Steelheads hold down the 7th best farm system, with the top prospects in the Idaho system being hitters.

CF - 18 year old Shojiro Chouda will start 2027 in A ball. He hit .276/11/58 in 2026, spending 3/4th of the season in R and the remained in A ball.
CF - 19 year old Koto Matsui, starting the 2027 season in AA.  He hit .280/22/77 splitting time between A and AA in 2026.
1B - 21 year old Harry Read will start 2027 in AAA. He tore the cover off the ball in AA in 2027, .302/22/97 and 20 steals. His bat is close to AFBL ready.

These guys are followed closed by 2B Ogawa, playing in R, Catcher Eric Martin, 20, playing in AAA, CF Jose Arroyo, invited to spring training with the big club in 2027 and P - Hal Joe, who will pitch in AAA this year.

The Outlook

A young nucleus of talented players should be able to compete for a playoff spot in 2027. This club has some power, lots of speed, and deep starting pitching and should be entering the championship window. No doubt there needs to be some improvement from the number 4 and 5 starters, and good health throughout the lineup, but this team should be entertaining and competitive for the next few seasons.

Best of luck to everyone in 2027.

Klebel Gets 1000th Hit
« Reply #1 on: October 21, 2015, 08:30:40 am »
On April 14, 2027, Bingham Klebel, second overall pick in 2019, eclipsed the 1000 hit mark. He is the first Steelhead to accomplish this feat.

Congrats Klebel.

Next milestone for the Steelheads is 1000 strikeouts by a pitcher. Zach Anderson is within 20 k's of that mark.

Mid Year Review
« Reply #5 on: November 09, 2015, 02:55:17 pm »
The 2027 season is a little over halfway done. The Steelheads sit at 49-40, their best ever 89 game record. The club leads the AFBL in batting average and are second in steals, only 3 behind Texas.

The Good

SS Loren Dobson is a legit MVP candidate. .312-20-71 with 33 steals. He has a chance to set several Idaho team records.
2B Mal Parks is hitting .330 and is on pace for several career bests.
C Dan Dixon .293-10-36 and has been a steady backstop for the pitching staff.
RF - Hernandez in his second season is hitting .310 with 10 triples and 34 steals.
DH - Klebel is having a bounce back season hitting .323 and has 41 RBI. His career high RBI is 52.

P - Zach Anderson is 14-1 2.53 at the break.
P Jims - O'Brien and Fish have 8 wins each and ERA's under 3.50.
Closer Butler has a solid 23 saves.

The Bad

1B - Mike McKinney is having his worst year since his rookie season. .209-9-49. If he doesn't turn it around, AAA 21 year old Harry Read may take his starting spot.
3B _Brad Allen is struggling. .211-10-34 is not what the team was expecting from this second year player.
P - Vic Taylor has been really up and down. Currently sporting a 3-9 record and close to a 5 ERA.

The Ugly

Thus far there is really nothing ugly with this Idaho squad. No doubt the 1B and 3B situation are disconcerting and may become ugly spots...

The Outlook

The Steelheads currently lead the wild card race by 2 games. They have a couple of players exceeding expectations and who should regress in Parks and Klebel, but the rest of the roster is on par with their expected performance or underachieving. I appears that 87 wins is a likely target and maybe more. Will that be enough for a playoff spot? Only time will tell. No matter the outcome, this has been the best season for Idaho and the fans are excited for the remainder of 2027 and the immediate future.

Prospects Traded for Vet Pitcher Anderson
« Reply #6 on: November 16, 2015, 01:02:45 pm »
Idaho, in the throws of a playoff race has decided to upgrade the starting pitching staff. Traded were former 1st round pick, Koto Matsui (RF) and 2nd round pick Juan Perez (CL) and a 4th round pick in 2027. Brad Anderson,  60-70 career record has been brought in and will slide into the #3 spot in the rotation. Jim O'Brien moves to #4 and Cesar Farias is now the #5 starter. Struggling Vic Taylor has been moved to the bullpen and reliever Joe Bennett has been demoted to AAA.

Matsui http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/statslab/player.php?player_id=6786
Perez http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/statslab/player.php?player_id=4214

Good luck to them in Colorado.

Playoff Race
« Reply #7 on: November 20, 2015, 08:36:05 am »
We have reached September and playoff fever is running high across Idaho. A great race for the wildcard is brewing between Texas, Idaho and Washington. 3 teams battling for 2 spots.

Idaho has called up a few players from the AAA club who will miss the postseason. The biggest call up is 1B Harry Read, coming off a great AAA campaign and appearing to be ready to log some serious time at first base. With longtime 1B Mike McKinney in the throws of a career worst season, Read is going to try and fill the gaps to help Idaho reach the post season for the first time.

September is going to one exciting month. Go Steelheads!

Zach Anderson notches 20th win of season
« Reply #8 on: November 25, 2015, 12:01:09 pm »
Congrats to Zach Anderson on becoming the first Idaho pitcher to ever eclipse 20 wins in a season and to be the first to 100 wins in a Steelhead uniform.

Anderson is 21-5 2.73. He is having a career season leading Idaho in its playoff push.

Playoff Run Short
« Reply #10 on: December 01, 2015, 02:24:20 pm »
Idaho was swept out of the playoffs in 2027 but a strong California club. Three of the 4 games were close but the team just couldn't get a big hit.

The 2027 season was a big success for Idaho. Looking forward to the 2028 season.
