Title: 2018 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on March 24, 2014, 08:08:42 pm
Hello everyone!

Winter is almost over and we are getting close to Spring to begin the 2018 season. Will the Colorado Bears be able to continue the streak and go for their 3rd consecutive FCS Cup title? Will the West Virginia Hollers get their revenge can bring the FCS Cup back to the Patriot League with the Frontier League claiming 4 of the first 5 titles? Or will some of the league's up and coming teams decide that it is their turn in the playoffs?

The majority of teams voted in the 2017 Winter Meetings to keep Interleague Play after its single season implementation with a ton of success.

AFBL welcomes 2 new GMs to the league with Mike Jewell in Illinois and Mike Wilkinson in Oregon. Welcome guys!

I'm working on getting the new file as we speak. The year rollover takes some time so stay tuned. We will get back to our normal sim schedule which is a sim of 10-game days on Mon-Wed-Fri at 6am CT for our new GMS.

Wednesday (3/26) will be the 1st half of Spring Training 2018 which is 12 games and then Friday (3/28) will be the 2nd half of Spring Training (final 12 games). Monday (3/31) will be Opening Day 2018!

Yeah I always forget about these. I'll upload in the morning!

Also, I forgot to unretire Ron Pratt. He'll be placed back on New Jersey's roster for the start of Spring Training. Sorry about that Mike!

For those that want the messages that are missing in your game... download this (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/messages.zip) then extract the 'messages' folder over the current 'messages' folder that you have in your AFBL.lg folder.

1st half of Spring Training is completed. I forgot to do FA signings until after the ST games so my apologies. New file is up, reports are extracting, and Statslab will be updated soon.

UPDATE: Reports and Statslab are up to date!
Title: Re: 2018 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on March 26, 2014, 07:25:45 am
Idaho is reporting some minor league players directing to wrong players. Let me know if others are seeing the same. Not sure what's going on. My guess it has to do with unretiring Ron Pratt.
Title: Re: 2018 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on March 26, 2014, 07:28:04 am
Now VA and NJ reporting the same. I think it'll be the same fix as we dealt with last season. I believe it was the unretiring of Pratt and dealing with the database cleanup. You might just need to download the League File link at the top of the page and extract over your contents. Stay tuned.
Title: Re: 2018 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on March 26, 2014, 07:34:05 am
Stand pat for now. I'm seeing if there is an easier fix than downloading the League File then extracting over. Sorry guys!

Post by: mstreeter06 on March 26, 2014, 08:38:55 am
Okay thanks to Mike and Chappy to help test on their end. We have a fix if your game has players being linked to incorrect players...

-Close your OOTP14 game
-Download this file: afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/PlayersRetiredDat.zip (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/PlayersRetiredDat.zip)
-Take the contents (players.dat and retired.dat) and replace the same named files in your AFBL.lg folder
-Open up your game and test

Sorry about this guys!

StatsLab is screwy, too.  I have players listed as playing up to 3 games on the same date and playing in over 20 games this past sim.

I reran Statslab. Do things look better for you?

I'm still not able to get the correct box scores to display besides the last game of the sim at least for me. Any thoughts Frank?

NC is tearing it up this spring.  Hopefully it carries over to the regular season.

StatsLab itself looks ok to me now.  I don't see the issue with players having played games they didn't actually play.  The links to the HTML reports are still a bit screwy, but that may fix itself with the next HTML update.

We have finished Spring Training! New file is up, reports are extracting, and Statslab is coming soon. Opening Day is Monday! Don't forget that the minor league maximum roster size rule goes into effect on Opening Day (AAA-30, AA-30, A-35, RL-35) so please be sure to make any necessary adjustments!

Pulling it down now... the previous file had some box scores missing, did you get the number right for this sim?
Title: Re: 2018 Discussion Thread

Yeah they're still missing, 15th, 16th and 17th.. but what do Ic are.. Sepulveda came back from long term injury  and pitched 4 near perfect innings (gave up just 1 hit and no walks).

Crap I probably miscounted the number of days to include. Should I upload a new file?

You only need to zip up the box scores and game logs and post them here for anyone who wants to extra them into their game.
Title: Re: 2018 Discussion Thread
Post by: mikezone13 on March 28, 2014, 08:08:07 am
Go into AFBL.lg\news\html\box_scores and AFBL.lg\news\html\game_logs and zip up all the files that have a modified date of today, then post them here.

Or people can see these games in the online reports if needed.

Okay if you want the missing box scores and game logs, here you go...

Download the zip files then take the contents and place into their respective folders.

Box Scores: afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/box_scores.zip (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/box_scores.zip)
Game Logs: afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/game_logs.zip (http://afblbaseball.com/afbl/leaguefile/game_logs.zip)

Texas only predicted to have 82 wins?  Tommy Carr projected to hit a paltry .335?  Ron Martin to have 378 strikeouts?

Good luck to everyone in season 6.  I'm moving to Minnesota over the weekend and will have internet access by Monday so I won't miss any action.

Haha yeah some of the predictions seem alittle crazy although I won't mind the Martin 378 (heh) strikeouts.

Good luck with the move!

Down side is my team still sucks. Up side is my trade for starting pitching is off to a great start. Walt Connor is 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA and Lonnie Simmons is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA. I knew my team would be bad but its nice validation for that deal, especially since so far Irvin's debut for me came with a 18 ERA.

8 games and no hitting for Idaho. The team is hitting .202 thus far. The only good hitting news thus far is we are striking out less than everyone else in the FL...2nd season, gonna be a long one.

Last year we were 1-7 in the first 8 games.  Didn't think we could do worse this year!

I'm pleased with 2B Cy Wilcox's start.  The rookie didn't even get called up to Spring Training till the 2nd half of March, but made the team after walking a ton and has a .471 OBP so far on the year for us.  The pitching is worse than predictably terrible.

Texas is in the last spot in the FL East. Something have to change in my team for the next sim but a lot of things arent working right now. Players like Mendoza, Rosado or Correa are with avg close to 0.200 and between them only 4 home runs but 56 strikeouts in only 17 games jajajajaj. That should be a record!!!

I'm considering unchecking the "Enable Storylines" option for the league. This would remove players retiring or walking away from the game randomly from a non-injury. I'm fine with either side of this option though. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

That's more of my opinion. I see why it's an option but for us it adds nothing and could cripple a franchise unfairly.

How often has that actually happened since the league began? Is it more, less, or on-par with CEIs?

In a no finances league where clubs can tend to remain static for years, I think storylines adds a solid random variable.

I can think of 3 so far in our 5+ years. Luis Bravo (convicted and served jail time), Ron Pratt (mormon mission), and Tim Francis (donated kidney to sister).

I'm not sure the number of CEI we've had as a league. I know the recent one was NC's Boots Thompson.

Overall I'm not a fan of storylines, however I do see the point about this being a no finances league so it can spice things up.

I assume this is question for winter meetings though.

True - but the chance is the same for every GM, my main gripe is that I tend to see more of the "really bad storyline stuff" happening to better players, which isn't a good thing. How many AA players went on mormon missions or got sent to jail? ;)

This is my main concern too. The few that we've had as a league has had events occur to some of the league's best.

In fairness the game probably is skewed because its offering headline events and its rare a no name player would make headlines for good or bad reasons. So it stands to reason good or bad, the news will be about significant players. But if turning off storylines will stop retirements because of age, etc, than that causes a bigger issue.

It definitely won't stop guys retiring due to age, just stops the storyline 'retirements' - becoming a golf pro, jail time, kidney donation, mormon missions etc.

4-4 this sim could have done better but for some reason my OF keeps coming in to play SS in extra inning games, in his career he has played 28 games started 6 at SS and made 10 errors its really annoying.

Next week  will be tough with Colorado coming just for 2 games but all games against pretty good teams

Right back to sub par baseball. Tough run of 4 losses out of the gate in May. Won 4 of the last 6 so turned it back around. I suppose some inconsistency is to be expected right now. Irvin and Connor pitching unevenly right now, Simmons getting his stride. Seems like real life with Connor a bit off following his no hitter. Might need to find a way to address that and get him back on track. Upside is getting a little more from Graves which would give me 4 solid starting pitchers.

Hitting wise, good production from the trio of Legarth, Knox and Kirby. Good core for the future. Still working on pieces around them.

Anytime I can get a 5-4 sim I'll take it, even if West Virginia busted us open twice and Virgina shut us out twice.

We actually had a winning month of May last year, maybe it's our good luck month.

On May 17 Liam Meadows hit a top of the 13th inning grand slam to eventually win the game for us at Georgia 13-9. The home run put Meadows into 5th all time on the Maryland career home run leaderboard with 62, surpassing Ian Vaughan who now resides in the Virginia system after being selected in the 2017 Expansion Draft.

The ONE thing that doesn't make the Newbold trade a complete and utter bust (although still a major fleecing). He's been the sort of lefty power bat I was hoping so far, and he's still just turning 23. But his durability is fragile (does that change? I swear I thought he was "normal").

Newbold has been an absolute star for me, in fact he's been arguably the best reliever in the league and I've been shocked by his durability as well.

To your question about the 'fragile tag'  - I am not sure if this changes or not. I'd hope it does, but in very few cases, as normally if you're injury prone that just doesn't go away.

No my computer posted when it crashed and i forgot to add what i said, and Maillot had been a Great pitcher for a bad team which makes him better plus WAR of 15 and a whip of 0.78 plus he was out for 12 months to let you catch up and i will (hopefully) destroy you during this mornings sim.

And the rest of our GMs have voted Robert in to 4 ASG in his 4 seasons so I rest my case, and you havent won a title yet :P so playoffs dont matter

Also, congrats to Ned Hass of Oregon for becoming the first pitcher to 100 wins.

Jorge Sepulveda looked to be the man to do it comfortably, only for injury to ruin his season in 2017. That meant it was a great 3 way battle between Haas, Leon and Sepulveda, with Haas getting there first.

Weird to think that Oregon, with Haas and Lozano, has the most runs allowed in the AFBL.

This is just crazy!

Colorado RP Rob Kirby is 12-0 in 29 G, 2.14 ERA, 33.2 IP, 3.50 FIP. We are halfway through the season haha. That's a lot of stolen wins from the starters lol.

Sorry about the ASG somehow not getting scheduled at the beginning of the season. I'll close the ASG voting in the next 45 minutes or so (when I get settled at work) and then create a thread here on the forum with the would be selected All-Stars. My apologies!

Wow... Willie Patton actually hit a home run with runners on base this sim!

Mike Brown had a 7 RBI game against Virginia with 2 HR including a grand slam.

Crazy game against Virginia on July 8: Heading into the bottom of the 8th the score was tied 5-5. We scored twice in the bottom of the 8th to make it 7-5, Virginia scores 5 in the top of the 9th to go up 10-7, and with two outs in the bottom of the 9th Bob Roberts gets a pinch hit, walkoff triple with the bases loaded to cap an 11-10 win!

Some epic games that sim, 18 innings v WV, followed up by 15 innings against them the next day. Then a 28 run game, we lost, against Colorado.

And yes, an injury,m Geboyan gone for 6 weeks, at least it's not season ending.

Fortunately I've only had one major injury this year (to the guy who was my #3 hitter at the start of the year) but what has hurt me most was the deterioration of my bullpen...  most of these guys are not that old, so I don't know why they've forgotten how to pitch well.

5-5 sim for texas that is not enough at this moment. we lost three matches by 1 run and two more by 2 runs

Taylor is playing amazing, I expect to reach the playoffs to play with a short starting rotation, in that kind of games I would be more competitive because I have 2-3 starters who can compete, but the other 2 are awful and thats why we are not doing a good season so far. two of my starters have a 3-20 record combined XD

6-3 sim. Two straight months over .500 baseball, what's going on?

doping?

Given the team's history thus far, I think that only applies to the GM.  ;)

Final August sim has been completed. New file is just beginning to upload and it includes the 2018 Ammy Draft Pool (not great but I promise the drafts will get better as the feeder leagues get through their 1st cycle of players). Reports and Statslab will be updated soon! Don't forget about rosters expanding to 40!

Our best sim in such a long time... just 16 runs given up in 11 games led to a 9-2 result. In seven of those wins we gave up just 1 run or less.

But of course we couldn't dodge the injury with Tim Houston getting booted from our lineup for 7 more weeks.

Re the draft pool - Matt don't worry about the quality, OOTP 14 was built this way, guys will develop into quality players, rather than all look studs and then regress.

We definitely see more 4 star draft regressing to 3 star while the lower stars aren't becoming 4 and 5 in the correct 10% or so.

We've taken a 2-game lead on Virginia for the wildcard.  However, none of the WC contenders are playing exceptional ball right now.  I'm going to go conservative on my call-ups just to make sure we keep the best team we can out there.

Team...............................   W-L . PCT . Last10
Ontario Blue Pirates   ........76-59 . .563 . 4-6
North Carolina Aviators....75-60 . .556 . 5-5
Virginia Diamond Club......73-62 . .541 . 4-6

Hey!  We won a ROTM award.  Honshorst has been an unusually productive Washington hitter, and he's also been tremendous with the glove at SS.  It's nice to see something positive from the team.  I'm excited about calling up Ed Moon for September.  Also a bit frustrated with Artie Bass's showing in AAA so far.

Oh yeah, Ron Taylor is his name!!!! In 6.2 innings, 2hits, 3BB and 10Ks.

8-2 sim for Texas that is looking desperately for wins because the season is close to the end and Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois are not waiting for us... Funny sim with a 12-1 loss against Kentucky and another loss in extrainnings against New York, but the team seems better now.

1 month left and the fight in the FL East is huge with 4 teams really close (77 wins the first, 72 the fourth)

39-year old Greg Shepherd is having a Maryland Comeback Player of the Year type year. He's got 18 home runs (his career high of 19 was in 2013), posting his highest slash lines & OPS of his career. This after spending the better part of the last two years in the minors.

This is true. Its no good if guys are raw and don't develop into anything near their max talent. Sure everyone will eventually sort of deal with that but people with stars from then in their minors will dominate the league if the new draft guys dont develop. And beyond that it will be fairly mediocre.

Crap, lost Don Wilson, my pitcher who was having the best year, for the season/postseason.  That kills our chances of going anywhere even if we make the playoffs, as we still haven't replaced Big Boots Thompson, who was 10-0 last season when he suffered a CEI.  2 years ago we had a stacked rotation for the next decade; now we have two AAA guys in the rotation.

Been a busy several days between work and family... regarding the Amateur Draft Pools and player development... I'm going to hold off on making any changes or adjustments to anything. We hadn't gotten through a full cycle of players in our feeder leagues and the league itself is only 6 seasons old. My stance and decision is to let things play out and we can reassess after a few more seasons.

Final regular sim is FRIDAY! Vote for Season Awards in Statslab!

We have playoff races that will certainly come down to the final regular season series...
-FL East: Kentucky has a 2 game lead over Texas & Illinois and a 3 game lead over Indiana
-FL Wildcards: Texas and Illinois have the same record and hold the 2 WC spots with Indiana just 1 game back
-PL North: New Jersey has a 5 game lead over Ontario
-PL Wildcards: Ontario has a 3 game lead over North Carolina for the 1st WC, North Carolina has a 3 game lead over Virginia for the final WC spot

How will things play out?

Good luck to everyone still in with a shot of making it, except Ontario ;)

Huge 3-game series during the final sim between NC and VA!

NC (48-27 home, 38-40 road) final schedule:

3 games vs Maryland (27-51 road)
3 games vs Virginia (31-44 road)
3 games @ Georgia (29-46 home)

VA (52-26   home, 31-44 road) final schedule:

3 games vs Georgia (35-43 road)
3 games @ North Carolina (48-27 home)
3 games @ New York (26-49 home)

So my remaining opponents are winning 38% of their games (accounting for home/road) and Virginia's opponents are winning 48% of their games.  That gives us a slight edge, but the 3 head-to-head games will be ever so important.

fuck, the 14 innings against Illinois killed all my RPs and I pay it against New Mexico with 2 losses in the last two games of the sim.

Illinois has the easiest final sim so I would say that he will be in the playoffs and Kentucky has 2 wins lead so they will be there too. Indiana and Texas will be fighting for the last spot. This is my prediction

Yeah definitely. It appears that is by design from the schedule template we use for our division favored scheduling. Very cool that the schedule is setup to have a final inter division series to end the regular season.

Oops missed this sorry! That is something that you can set your 7 day lineups and then post on the forum in the Sim Instructions how you want your lineups. Then I can manually adjust as needed.

A Unique stat I have the top 3 players in batter war in the PL this year and its all because i moved Kurota to 1B from RF and Chambliss from 1B to RF they both had the same OF range error and Arm so it was a no brainier good to see them bounce back

We had a rough sim team wise, but one of our top prospects, SP Artie Bass, had a nice debut.  He struck out 11, walked 2, and gave up just 2 hits in a 7 inning no-decision.  We lost 5-4 in the 13th.

AFBL will have it's first Game 163 in a 1-game playoff to decide a division winner. We can get this done whenever the 2 teams are ready to go!

The final 10 games of the 162 games has been completed and the new file has just started the upload process (should be ready in about 10-15 minutes). I'll get reports and Statslab updated as soon as possible.

Congrats to everyone on a great regular season and good luck to those involved in game 163 then the playoffs!

Looking forward to the playoffs for the 6th straight year, maybe we'll get some luck in this one!

Note our export is NOT a playoff ready export.

Everything is updated!

We'll sim Game 163 whenever the teams involved are ready. From there we'll allow the 8 playoff teams to get their 1st playoff export in. We'll sim daily Mon-Fri for the playoffs but can start/continue whenever the teams involved are ready. I'm all for some weekend sims haha.

I'll get the Ammy Draft stuff together today as well so we can begin with the 1st Round.

Thanks guys!

Colorado sat it's entire starting lineup and rotation the final 4 games. Surprisingly went 0-4 haha. Of course the Bears lost RP Johnny Henry to an injury after I decided to not rest my bullpen.

2 games back in the division with both wild cards coming out of the FL East and Indiana still missed the playoffs.  Crazy tight finish for sure.  Good luck everyone in the playoffs.

In triple A the West has DOMINATED the east. The East has only one championship and that was last year. I don't know if the dons were exhausted after their 7 game series but they laid down for the Peaches losing 4 games to 1.

North Carolina entered it's 3-game series with a 1-game lead on Virginia and we swept them!

That gave us a 4-game lead with 3 games to go, securing a trip to the playoffs for the fourth time in six seasons.

A few notes about our season:

Crawdad Hicks broke his own team record in batting for a season with a .330 average (old record was .325).

Hicks also posted an OBP of .426, giving him 6-straight seasons with an OBP greater than .400

Hicks also walked 101 times, giving him 6 100+ walk seasons in a row.

Don Wilson's 2.59 ERA was the 3rd lowest in team history, although he will miss the playoffs due to injury.

Daryl Clark set a new team record for Saves with 50.

Joe Haines, at age 41, set the team record for Innings Pitched with 238.

Well, we had a good final sim to finish above .300.  Not exactly world beating, but it makes me a bit happier.  Artie Bass had an interesting final start in his debut month.  He allowed 2 runs on 1 hit over 7 innings while striking out 12.  Both runs came on Bennie Ratzlaff's 42nd home run.  That's Bass's first big league win.

Our other top SP prospect, Jermaine Larson went 3-1 in his first 4 major league starts.  His WHIP was far worse than Bass's, but his ERA was slightly better.  I'm excited about these guys moving forward.

Good luck to all the playoff teams, as well as our game 163 contestants!

Got to 70 wins on the last day of the season! First time out of the 60s in wins since the club won 85 in 2013.

+6 wins from 2017.

By the way, is there a reason we are doing a tiebreaker game when both teams are already in the post season?  I assumed head to head would give KY the division and TX the wild card.

It wasn't my choice but the game decided it. I do approve of it since the division didn't have a clear winner based on the record of 162 games.

That tiebreaker I use for the Ammy Draft if necessary.

Ontario's Jonathan Warren Named Top PL Manager: Ontario manager Jonathan Warren was selected as the 2018 Patriot League Manager of the Year today.

He was somewhat of a dark horse next to some of the more flashy managers up for the award. Warren, who prefers that everyone call him "Cap" or "Skip," tries to shy away from the limelight in a media-driven world.

"It's really unfair to the guys that busted their humps all year long to put all the focus on me now. They showed up early, put in extra time in the cage, worked on their fielding, consulted with our coaching staff and really made 2018 a highlight in my career."

In fairness to this year's Manager of the Year, Warren certainly played an important part in the Blue Pirates success as he guided them to a second place finish in the Patriot League North and a 96-66 record.
I agree with this my team was 22 win better then last year

I'm testing out a SMF Forum mod that brings a Facebook/GTalk style chat bar to the site at the bottom.

It shows 'Who's Online' on the left end of the bottom bar.

I've been looking for a way to make things easier for GMs to quickly chat with each other while they're both online on the AFBL website.

Uploading a new file right now to fix some wackiness. I realized I had the 'names.dat' file option not checked to include in the League File. Redownload the new file if you've already downloaded the one from about 90 minutes ago.
