Title: 2019 Discussion Thread
Post by: mstreeter06 on May 21, 2014, 07:21:34 am
The offseason is finally over and spring is just about to arrive in the AFBL. 2019 will be the final season the league uses OOTP14 before we upgrade to OOTP15 for the 2020 season. The league welcomes 3 new owners and is very excited for the upcoming season along with the seasons ahead.

The New Jersey Athletics finally got the monkey off their back in the playoffs after claiming their 1st AFBL National Cup (league decided to update the title series and trophy). Will they be able to defend their title or will the league see someone else like one of the league's perennial contenders or one of the league's up and coming teams claim themselves the best in 2019?

The 1st half of Spring Training (12 games) will be held TOMORROW (Thursday) and then the 2nd half of Spring Training will be on Friday.

Opening Day 2019 will be on Monday!

I know these predictions are often wrong, and you guys love to mock my team but I see this team competing for a playoff spot. I have the most of my #1/#2 minor league system promoted which has pushed me all the way to 11th. I believe this team will be good. If I am wrong it will be seriously sad.

Wow - talk about struggles with the bat in ST 4-8 and while we kept the opposition reasonably quiet, we were quieter for sure.

As always though ST is just about blowing away the cobwebs, not the opposition ;)

Willie Patton is trying to cement his reputation as King of the Solo Home Run this year, and he's off to a decent start with five homers in the first half of Spring and three of them being solo shots.

Just two minor injuries in the second half; we miss a setup guy for 3 weeks and our starting SS for 2... but I usually have somebody out the first two months, so I'll take it.

BNN has us fininshing 1 game ahead of Idaho despite predicting them to score more runs and allow fewer than us.  Oh well.  StatsLab (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/statslab/seasonPreview.php) has us worse than last year, but I think we'll actually be a bit better with some of the youngsters starting to fizzle to the surface.

A more than solid start for the defending champs (how good does that sound?). Everyone contributed and our bullpen started on fire again (0.93 ERA for the sim), with Bob Jones picking up 5 saves in his first shot at being the long term closer in New Jersey.

We also got some good power production this sim, which turned our few base runners into runs.

6-3 is never bad, I'd take 5-4 every sim from here on in ;)

Interesting notes from the standings:

- The top four teams in the FL currently come from the Eastern Division.  All are 12-6 or 11-7.

- Colorado is the only team to allow 100 runs (Oregon has 89 in the FL) and they are co-leading the FL West.

Juan Castillo after shitting the bed in the first 2 starts K's 22 and SHO WV, This sim had 2 CG and my closer got 2 wins so my pitching is ok, even tho my hitting is 5th they haven't been very good in my option i have some good starts but my catcher hitting 4 HR (had 8 last year) but hitting .164 isnt going to work hopefully every body heats up and we can continue winning and staying in first.

Side note my 4th round pick this year came in for my injured RF and hit a HR in a loss to WV

Got a tough series against the league best pen in Georgia coming up plus NC after, with there players coming back they will be tough but most of the sim will be at home so i think im good

Better than expected sim, again. This whole defending champs tag is being worn well by the team. Rotation and bullpen, very very solid, I'd even start to suggest we have the best pitching unit in the AFBL.

Schroeder didn't make much of a contribution after his move from Pennsy, Geboyan is struggling at the plate too, while Benton's days as a classy reliever are looking well and truly over at 39y/o, just happy he lasted that long honestly.

Ten interleague games will give us some variety next month, but there's also an important, yet not pivotal, 3 game series at Ontario to deal with.

Disgusting April - truly playing like an expansion team. Plenty of pitching hope in the minors, but none of it is close to the majors. The hitting on the other hand...yikes... Well on to May...

Really disappointed this sim I know I went 5-3 but got smoked on the road in NC and barly beat GA but the pitching didnt fair well but did the job and my hitting went down.

The wins kept me in tied for the PL best REC but going forward with 5 at home and 5 on the road this is another tough sim as I am 12-1 at home and 6-7 on the road  Plus a series against The war Hawks

Ika Kuahine first game this season hits a HR he had none last year which is cool, the top 3 SB leaders all played for my team. Really disappointed getting struck out 21 times in one game.

Hoping my Catchers come around but my Pitching looks good with new Addition Sammy Wells when he gets healthy
Loving to see Dwayne Chapman on a leader board

On the 28th, Don Wilson struck out 15 Pirates in only 6.1 innings... and the 4 relievers combined for 6 more K's for a total of 21 fanned Pirates in one game.

I knock out NM SP before the 5th twice but still get crushed, The my ACE doesn't make it out of the 5th for the 2nd time this year. Lose a heart breaker with RM allowing a unheard of 2 hits. Ending on 3 game winning streak is good got some games next sim that i should win before sim against NJ.

My Hitting showed up my Pitching kinda didn't so need a better week next week

My Catcher end sim on 5 game hitting streak and 4 game BB streak to now have .208 ave, 2018 MVP gets a hit in every game but one this sim looking to hit above .300 this year, Ika Kuahine after last years shit show has 2hr and a .300 + ave good start for my back up.

Sidenote I really hate/ love my players doing good for other teams ex. VA with 2 3B 2b C SS all drafted by me

Encapsulated very nicely there, most importantly only 20 runs given up in those 10 games, including 5 games with 1 run or less given up.

Sepulveda is back to his best now sitting 7-0 from 8 starts with a 1.78 ERA and 0.75 WHIP.

We did lose Gaboyan for 3 weeks though in some bad news, but Kang is a more than able replacement, despite what his current stats say.

We're also still waiting for Schroeder to get going since moving from Pennsy, disappointing to say the least.

3-5 sim against all under .500 opponents sucks but i have my best pitchers to face NJ, last time that happened they go the shit kicked out of them, well this time im home for like the whole sim so should do a wee bit better Or the fans wont be to happy 7 games back and tied for WC not where expected to be.

We started the sim with 2 wins over Virginia to overtake them for 1st place, but then proceeded to get swept by West Virginia and lose one of three to last-place Georgia to fall back into 2nd place.

Don Wilson has been terrible since his 15 Ks in 6.1 innings game.  10.23 ERA in 5 starts TURRABLE.

7-2 sim. Best in the History of NM/AZ. Still can't run down Colorado. Apparently the Geritol is in full force for them.
4 games up on the wildcard and the team is really rolling. I have plenty of depth right now for a big trade or injuries.
5th in the power rankings, winning games we should, being competitive in the rest. "The Process" has actually come through for my team.

5-6 is a bad way to end the month, but we've at least got a 5 game lead.

Our main power hitter, Mal Warren, will be missing for most of June so we'll be relying on everyone else to step up to the plate now.

Everything is updated!

I'll turn on All-Star Game voting in Statslab in a moment (for some reason the schedule didn't generate an ASG again, guess I had to manually regenerate it?). This will be resolved next year and beyond when we upgrade to OOTP15. Sorry about that guys! I wish it was possible to fix but it was confirmed by Markus that there isn't after you get past the offseason or preseason.

Also, Georgia is now open. The new owner never exported once since joining and hasn't responded to me. I'll quickly get this filled this weekend hopefully.

Monday's sim will start at about 8am CT. We're moving on Tuesday and I took Monday off to begin packing things up so I'll run the sim on Monday when I get up on a non-work, typical weekday schedule :).

For those new to the league, the All-Star Game selections are made in Statslab. I'll then take the top vote selection at each position... C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, SP, RP. The for the reserves, I'll take the 2nd most voted selection for the position players and then the next 5 vote getters for SP and RP. So 2 at each offensive position and 6 starters and relievers. For any injured selections, I'll select a replacement either by votes or Commish selection. For any positions with an unanimous selections, there'll be a Commish selection for that position's reserve.

I'll take 8-3 any day when the schedule featured NJ, CO and VA.

I can't believe the season Jesus Gutierrez is having at age 32.  His career 162 game averages entering the season were .257-22-79, and he's batting .355-18-55 in just 53 games.  So, in less than 200 at bats this season he's got 10 more RBI than he had in 418 at bats last year.

Nice sim there (6-3), added a couple more games to our lead over Ontario and beat WV 2-1 in a series. Two losses to Oregon stopped what could've been a brilliant sim result.

On the negative side Sepulveda had his first loss of the year and really got taken to in his 2 starts. But overall our pitching both from the rotation and the pen are second to none so far.

Speaking of power, 3B Jose Ibarra hit three more and is leading the AFBL with 27. He's only 11 away from tying the team record for a season. And with his 63 RBI, he may become the first player in franchise history to get 100.

But, SP Shawn Curran gone for a year with torn elbow ligament. Sigh.

Looks like we had ourselves a little brawl in Colorado, After Hammond hit a HR in the 3rd, Martin decided to then hit the next batter and MVP candidate Dan Allen.  Jeez Matt!!! I'd like to think Allen came out on top.

I Missed a export but went 6-4 and of my win leaders this year the top 4 on my team ar SP Flethcher with 9 CL Maillot with 8 SU Gould with 7 SP Castillo with 6 so my batters are giving me wins this year i feel good. Still only 4 GB of first so the loses to NJ dont hurt much this time

Haha that's a fair point. I wish this would be changed in real life. It irritates me when pitchers will get a multiple game suspension that only equals to 1 start.

NC overtakes our neighbors to the North with a 4-2 sim...  Won each series 2-1, over WV and GA.

Our next 10 games are all against sub-.500 teams, so now's the time to build a lead.

Back to back .500 sims. 8-8 isn't going to get it done for the division but it's better than a losing sim. I am 7 sims from a playoff birth if I can avoid a down turn :)
Those of you who are starting to play for the future, I have lots of prospects I am looking to trade. Even some young MLB ready/In MLB talent for the right pieces.

2 extra-inning wins, 1 extra-inning loss, 3-3 sim. At least for the most part we're being competitive in our losses although we do still have the occasional blowout. Not having Curran basically turns this into a complete rebuild year again instead of a "progress" year.

Sim report - 8 game lead now over Ontario and Sepulveda has caught Ned Haas with both tied for a league leading 120 career wins.

It's a great team effort this year which is mirroring our championship year somewhat. No big stars with the bat, although Taylor seems to be having a career year with wood in hand and Mayfield continues to prove I made the right decision moving on Garlez and installing him at 1B full time.

Our pitching and defence continues to be the foundation of our success, with only 330 runs given up, 39 better than next placed Texas.

Ugh, rotten time for 5-4 sim.  All 9 games were against sub-.500 teams.  Six of our next seven games are against Virginia (1 GB) and West Virginia (3 GB).  A bad sim could knock us from 1st to 3rd.

Jesus Gutierrez was 3-for-5 with 3 homers and 8 RBI vs Iowa on the 16th... that's a lotta RBI in one game.  He leads the AFBL with 94.

Indiana closer Willie Watson is now the AFBL's all time leader in consecutive saves converted.  He hasn't blown a save in 49 chances.

There aren't a lot of tight races this season as we approach the deadline. However...

- 3 of the 4 divisions are in runaway mode right now, though New Jersey is currently on a 5 game losing streak with their 8 game lead.  The PL South has a hot North Carolina team leading both West Virginia and Virginia by 4 games.

- The PL wild card has the previously mentioned WV and VA as the 2 recipients at the moment with Ontario 5 back.

- In what was easily the tightest division last year, the FL East is currently the most out of reach as Illinois continues to dominate with an 11 game lead on Indiana (despite being swept by the Vipers this sim).

- New Mexico has faltered a bit but they still maintain a 6 game cushion for a playoff spot in the wild card.  Indiana holds the second WC spot with a small 2 game lead over Texas.  Oregon and Kentucky are still in the hunt as well.

5-5 sim, the new guys performed well but our pitching got shelled in a couple of games. Thankfully our rough patch hasn't coincided with an ONtario hot streak so we maintain a reasonable lead, but we'll have to keep watch over our shoulder for sure.

Oh, and we lost starting 3B Schroeder for 2 weeks, of course this happens as soon as we trade Talley away.

Interesting notes about this and the upcoming sim:
Only team to sweep me was Georgia, which did so in front of an amazing 11000 fans COMBINED.
Took 2 of 3 from Texas which was pretty critical.
In the final game of the sim, the only run scored by Idaho came on a HR from long time NM/AZ star Cristo De La Garza.
In the next sim, the only 'series' that NM holds an advantage in is the 1 game remaining with Idaho (9-7) but is tied with Colorado, WV, Maryland, but would needs both wins against Oregon to get back to even in their series. Moral of the story: NM plays down to the competition.

2-7 sim with 6 losses by just 1 run and the other loss in the extrainnings

9-2 is always a nice sim result, especially when it contains 3 shutouts in a row, but we only gained a little on Ontario.

The other PL division is really hotting up - we play both Virginia's next sim I believe.

Can anyone say, 'best sim ever'? :) :D

We're now on a 12 game winning streak after some excellent pitching and defence. Only 12 runs given up in our games played including 3 shutouts with Virginia the only team to score more than 2 runs in a single game on us.

Hope we're not playing playoff baseball a month early.

Colorado has gone with a 4-man rotation for basically the entire season so far (used a 5th starter once or twice). The rotation group of 4 (Reynolds-Givens-Martin-Cook) seem to be handling it well. Reynolds has 37 starts already  ;D but I believe I'll give the guys a breather in the coming final weeks.

Indiana had an excellent sim with only 1 loss.  Unfortunately, it came with a crucial blow to my pitching staff.

- Ace Cipriano Hernandez was suspended for 13 games.
- #2 pitcher Jin Ojima is out for the season and likely all of next season requiring Tommy John surgery.

Thankfully the Vipers hitting has been stellar but they'll be going deep on the depth chart to replace these guys for the stretch run.

Other notes, some of which Matt mentioned already:

- The FL East may not be over.  Indiana pulled to within 5 and Texas within 6.
- TX and IN are battling for the final wild card spot with just a single game of separation.
- Tommy Carr has been lights out for the last month or so and is hitting .385.  If this pace holds, we could have a .400 hitter.
- Willie Watson finally blew a save (though he got the win).  The current AFBL for consecutive saves converted stands at 60, which is 12 more than Maddox Hynes of NJ.
- Oh, and the PL South division....just wow.  Ontario also in the playoff hunt just 2 GB of the Wild Card.

Wow, Freddie Taylor of Pennsy had a no hitter going against us, 2 down bottom fo the 9th and Xavier Harris pinch hits a home run. Pennsy still got the win 2-1 though.

A 7-3 sim including a 2-0 sweep of Colorado bodes well for playoff time. But for some reason we're struggling against Ontario this season as another series loss (1-2) is in the books.

Positively though we're just one win away from clinching the division and our 7th straight trip to the postseason.

I really can't believe the season Jesus Gutierrez is having.  I knew he was under-achieving last year when he hit .225-10-45, but I had no idea he was capable of doing what he's done this season.

Career highs in hits (185), 2B (41), 3B (6), HR (40), RBI (135), Runs (105), BB (44), HP (12), AVG (.318), OBP (.376), SLG (.616), OPS (.992), VORP (81.8), wOBA (.417), OPS+ (194), bWS (30.2) and tWS (35.9).  Although his 13 SB are 1 off his career high, the year he stole 14 he was caught 12 times and this year he's only been caught twice.

He's been a starter for 6 years with a 162-game average of .257-22-79.  With this season's stats, he's upped his 162-game averages to .266-25-89.

A few little snippets from the NJ stats desk...

1B Tim Mayfield is just 11 hits away from becoming only the 2nd Athletic to get 200 hits in a season
1B Tim Mayfield has already more doubles (49) in a season than anyone and will hopefully hit 50 before the end of the year
1B Tim Mayfield has set a new single season RBI record for NJ (126)
1B Tim Mayfield has tied the NJ single season extra base hit record that he already held (75)
1B Tim Mayfield needs 30 more bases to set a new NJ single season total bases record
CF Martik Geboyan has recorded his 6th season with more than 100 walks
C Jeff Neilsen has set a new NJ seasonal record for IBBs with 19 - why is he being IBBd?

This seems to confirm that moving Garlez to NM and putting Mayfield at 1B full time was the right decision.

Im not saying it wasn't the right move but I am glad you made the move. Garlez has been one of the most consistent players for me this year and a real nice piece when (hopefully) we make the playoffs.
Illinois seemed to have it sewed up but it's still possible for them to get bumped. They have a magic number of 3 to make the playoffs and 5 to clinch the division but it could get interesting for them.
Colorado in, NJ in unless they lose out and Ontario wins out, 3 team race for FL East, 3 team race for the FL Wildcard, 4 team scramble for the PL South and 2 PL wildcard spots....
Gonna be a helluva sim ya all!

That was an exciting sim... congrats to our 8 playoff teams!

New file is up! Reports and Statslab will be updated as soon as I can this morning.

We can begin the playoffs whenever all teams are ready to go. Starting Monday, we'll be simming daily at our normal sim time until we finish the playoffs. As always, we can go as fast as the playoff teams would like.

I'll be getting the Ammy Draft order corrected and announced so we can start that with the first 12 picks.

Don't forget to vote for the 2019 Season Awards in Statslab!

Missed the playoffs by one game. Came down to the last game of the season between us and NC winner goes to the playoffs and we couldn't get it done. The two losses to NY to start the sim hurt as well. Looks like we still have a little bit of work to do this off season!

Whew, good series Steve.  Entered the final series of the season against you tied for the wild card.  Each won one game to keep it tied for the finale.  I guess you could say the playoffs started 3 days early for us.

Yeah this battle went back and forth! I really thought we would need a 163rd game!

Missed the playoffs by one game. Came down to the last game of the season between us and NC winner goes to the playoffs and we couldn't get it done. The two losses to NY to start the sim hurt as well. Looks like we still have a little bit of work to do this off season!
Steve, you know normally I am rooting (american version not australian version) for ya but since I have your top 3 draft picks, I'm not sad you came up short :)

I MADE THE PLAYOFFS! I never was not in 1st in the division or wildcard. What a season. One game behind Ill. too so this team can contend!

texas made another comeback to be in the playoffs. now we will lose in the first round without a win, as always

Was just at our team v team record this year, we swept a total of 7 teams this season, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, New Mexico & Washington... all teams in the Frontier League except Georgia... we even beat Colorado 3-1... hmmm ;) :D

The worry is that we didn't have a record better than .500 against any of the PL playoff teams (.500 v NC and WV and  a very poor 7-11 v Ontario).

For me I just wanted a strong finish to see the young talent could contribute to wins next season. Ken Thomas had a much better second sim after his call up with 3 multi hit games in the last 7. Pat Gordon came up and hit .310 with 3 hrs and 9 RBIs. MacIntosh had a strong first season. Kirby, whose still only 21, hit .280 with 24 HR and 92 RBI. Duarte put up real solid power numbers despite having no protection behind him most of the season. As the line up matures, should be really solid. Al Jones has good power for the lower third of the line up where he will be long term. So I am at least moving in a forward direction, slowly.

I really dont understand how Roberto Maillot gets 11 first place votes but 2 people dont vote for him at all like dude i know they voted because Clark has 2 first place votes and WV doesnt have any votes for GM of the year weird

I hope this comment is not taken out of context as I think Statslab is fricking amazing but my problem with the voting is the seemingly inability to sort. It says due to browser compatibility but which browsers can i sort and pick from that list and instantly add. I dont have time to write them down nor can I remember. That is how many players i should vote for get missed.

Have 2 windows open on the same page, sort in one window, select in the other window, simple.

It's annoying but yes do what Mike said with 2 windows or tabs. I sometimes use 2 browsers and sort with one while vote with another.

Is it inconvenient?  Yes.

Is it even remotely difficult?  No.  I do not believe voting gets majorly skewed because of this at all.  If you are having issues voting, I'd recommend you abstain.

We set a franchise record with 62 wins this year... I guess that's a step in the right direction.  I wasn't too happy with how rookie Alex Benson played, though.  Hopefully, he'll make some positive strides over the winter and be ready to play next year.
