AFBL Announces Interleague Play for 2017

AFBL league officials have been busy planning for its future for the next few seasons. After several closed door meetings, league officials have decided that the AFBL will celebrate its 5th season in 2017 with interleague play for a single season. The Commissioner's Office wanted to give the league plenty of notice to prepare for this special single season rule change.

This was the only change that was finalized at the moment with any other changes being tabled until the 2015 Winter Meetings which includes the biggest decision of league expansion (likely 2018 will be 1st season with 20 teams). More specifics, discussions, and any other possible changes will be talked about during the Winter Meetings in the offseason following the conclusion of the FCS.

AFBL votes to set schedule as below... (Voting closed 11/22/13)
18 games against your division, 10 against other division in your league, 4 games against the other 10 teams in the other league.

I believe it'll be possible browsing the OOTP forums. I'll test it in my AFBLtest league in my game as well.

I like what you've got above matt, technically it's an unbalanced schedule as you play the IL opponents less than your league rivals...

Looks good!

Well crap you are correct. I wonder if there's a true balanced schedule option? I personally have no preference about how we set the schedule for our special season with interleague play.

There will be no true balanced option as 162 games divided by 15 opponents = 10.8 games against each. If you just let the game automatically create one it won't be too "wobbly".

However, I like the way you've got it above - only a few games against interleague opponents makes them special.

I like the look of it and I am with mike fewer games makes it special but 2 teams doesn't seem like enough with 8 games but that is just my option unless you cannot make it that way then it looks awesome, would it allow 2 games home 2 games road maybe for both series and not back to back series though because that would make it fair and still interesting.

I think you could balance it a little more by doing 14 games versus each division opponent (14*7=98) and 8 games versus each team in the other league (8*8=64) for the 162 total. This still makes division games more important but you do get a good taste of the other teams.

That being said I am cool with whatever. I have enjoyed my 1st season and look forward to whatever the next few seasons bring.

That's quite a nice split too LT - effectively 60%/40%

I like the idea of everyone playing each other during the interleague play. Here's how I hope to set schedule for the 2017 season assuming no expansion (we'll adjust accordingly if we expand in 2017)...

#
# 16 team schedule, 162 games
# Designed for the following configuration:
# 2 subleagues, each with 1 division, each with 8 teams
#
#
# 14 games against other 7 teams of division/league (7H/7A)
# 8 games against 8 teams of other subleague (4H/4A)
#
#
# Many 2-game and 4-game series
#
# The 2-game series are always at the beginning of the week and
# almost always followed by a 4-game series so as to keep
# from having many weeks with multiple offdays
#
# No team has more than 20 consecutive days without offday
#
# No homestands or roadtrips longer than 14 games
#
# All game times set at 7:05pm ET
#
# Season begins first Monday on or after April 1st
# Season thus ends late September/early October
#
# All-Star Game set for first Tuesday on or after July 9th

Since we will have 20 teams for the 2017 season instead of 16, we need to decide on how to setup our schedule. I have found 2 options...

1.) 14 games against your division, 9-10 against other division in your league, 6 games against the other 10 teams in the other league.

2.) 18 games against your division, 10 against other division in your league, 4 games against the other 10 teams in the other league.

Anyone have an opinion on either schedule option?

# Designed for the following configuration:
# 2 subleagues, each with 2 divisions, each with 5 teams
#
#
# 14 games against each of 4 other teams in division (7H/7A)
# 9-10 games against each of 5 other teams in subleague (3-6H/3-6A)
# 6 games against each of 10 teams in other subleague (3H/3A)
#
#
# Season begins with home/away pair of 2-game series vs interdivision opponent
#
# No cases of more than 20 straight days without offday
#
# Homestands and roadtrips stretch as long as 14 games
#
# All game times set at 7:05pm
#
# Season begins first Monday on or after April 1st
