Title: Inaugual Draft
Post by: mstreeter06 on May 21, 2013, 09:53:29 am
We are finally close enough to begin our league's inaugural draft to fill our rosters (ML team and 4 minor league levels)!

I'll do my best to work on getting Statslab setup and configured for the league so we can start our inaugural draft. I plan to draft 10-25 rounds live and then CPU the remaining rounds so we can get started.

Until I get Statslab setup (should be later today assuming work stays calm), we can start drafting here in this thread on the forum and I'll enter whatever results we have then continue the draft in the Statslab utility with a time-limit on each pick of TBD hours (4-12 hour time limit?).

The Oregon Explorers are free to make their selection followed by the North Carolina Aviators and then the New Jersey Athletics.

I won't be making my selection until statslab is up - as I don't have OOTP14, I have no means to sort players etc before then.

Understandable. I'll hopefully have it up and going today.

Even more tension around the first pick now... slugger, contact and speed man or ace pitcher?

With the help of Chappy's wizard skills, we finally have the Statslab OOTP Online Utility setup and configured for the league. This is where we will hold our inaugural draft and future amateur drafts. Also, from here you could run your team using the online reports and the forum for instructions.

Head to the Statslab link (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/statslab/StatsLab/boxscores.php) and login in for the first time. The default password is 'baseball' (no quotes). Once you get into Statslab, go to the draft section and this is where you'll find your team's war room and draft board. If you have any questions about this, post here or send me an email.

We will draft with a 120-minute time limit on your picks that runs from Monday to Friday that will start at 8am CST and end at 8pm CST. The timer will pause on the weekends and you can always make your pick whenever it gets to you if it is out of the time range or on the weekend.

We will open the draft without a clock until Thursday, May 23rd at 8am CST so everyone has a full 24 plus hours to get this message and have a chance to check out Statslab with the draft pool. Yuda's Oregon Explorers are now up and their clock will officially begin on the 23rd at 8am CST but is free to pick when ready. North Carolina and New Jersey are on deck.

Thanks guys and we continue to get closer to starting our first season. I'm working on getting logos and graphics to show correctly in Statslab and the HTML online reports so just some patience with that.

-Matthew

Nice selection for #1 overall in AFBL history. He should be a stud pitcher especially with his young age.

Nice pickup, was hoping he'd last until pick #3 as he came out on top of my SP analysis. He'll be winning you a lot of games no doubt.

FYI there are a lot of broken links to images in statslab because OOTP14 puts some of the images in a different location than v13 did... hopefully that will get fixed soon.

North Carolina selects 23-year-old Norberto Le?n (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/reports/html/players/player_2462.html) as the first player in franchise history.

He's a bit undersized for a starting pitcher (5'9", 185) so he reminds me a bit of Pedro Martinez... hopefully he can be as good.

I very nearly took Le?n. Lozano won out because of the year younger plus he's a finished product.

Trading picks for the inaugural draft might not work out but if you have something in my let me know. Trading amateur draft picks are definitely allowed for future reference.

that being said, the first 3 pitchers taken were the top 3 on my list!

That's another problem with drafting early... a full 26 picks until I get another crack, however there's some real talent in this draft from what I've seen and some fantastic depth in some positions too.

Yeah, I would have preferred the guy with the developed 10 stuff, especially since it could actually be higher than 10.

Yeah, I hate the long wait I'll have between picks...  But the good news is that if I'm torn between two players when my next pick comes along, I have a decent shot at landing them both.

There's always a good side to it. Can't wait for the draft to keep going so I can see all of my shortlisted picks fly by to other teams :D

What happens once the 120minute time limit comes into play if you haven't made your pick or setup a draft list? Do you drop down the order in that round or have a pick automatically assigned to you?

If you don't have players set up in a list, it will pick one for you.

Thanks, knowing that a good 6-8 hours of each draft window will occur while I'm asleep it makes getting the list together quite important.

Statslab creates its own list through a ranking formula and it will take the player it thinks is the best available...  it just might not take things like age into account so it could be a 39 year old star or something like that.

does it takes things into acount like his position?? if you already have four 3Bs for exampol, it will take one more??

Thanks, knowing that a good 6-8 hours of each draft window will occur while I'm asleep it makes getting the list together quite important.

There are two ways Matt can set the draft timer to work....

If he checks the box for "Adjust Pick Time With Each Pick", then knowing when your pick is coming can be really unpredictable; basically it starts the 90 minute window immediately after each pick is made.

If he leaves it unchecked, then the windows are fixed from the moment the first pick happens, so if your pick is due between 3:30 and 5:00 PM Tuesday it's due at 5:00 PM Tuesday even if everyone before you picks very quickly (of course you can make your pick before 3:30, that's just when the deadline of the person before you is).

I don't know if I'm explaining this very clearly.

I do not believe it takes position into account...  I think the in-game draft engine does though... so once we are finished picking players manually and want the CPU to finish for us, Matt should probably do that part in-game.

No worries about today since it was the first day of having the draft open. We'll have a draft pick time limit of 2 hours per pick starting tomorrow at 8am CST.

I'm leaning toward having the 2 hour window start for your pick once the owner before you picks but can have it on set 2 hour draft windows if more people prefer that way. The limit starting once the previous owner picks would speed things along but I'm fine either way. As long as owners have draft lists ready, we'll knock out the draft in no time.

Thanks guys!

I think we'll do 10 to 25 rounds live then sim the remaining. I know I'd like to have as much control over my major league roster. I'm open to whatever the majority would like.

Sounds good to me, for the most part things are flying through quite nicely so far.

If Colorado makes his pick soon, I will be making mine when I get home from work at abot midnight eastern time.  I had a list but all the players have been taken. Going to need a longer list by tomorrow morning I guess. It's too time consuming to try to make a pick from phone at work. Thanks.

Well the clock is paused on the weekends so that will help you out. I can assist as much as possible to if you have lists or anything. I can also help give you best available lists if you need it to (between work/class throughout the day). Just let me know!

Draft timer has started. 2 hour windows, timer starts after previous pick selection, runs 8a-8p CST, paused on weekend.

Massachusetts on the clock followed by Kentucky and New Jersey.

Yeah me neither. I think we'll go with set 2 hour windows for picks for a bit then shorten the window to 30-60 minutes after round X (10?).

My plan is to set 2 hour pick windows for this round and possibly round 3. Then we'll go to 30, 45, or 60 minute pick windows after that.

I have pick due times on everyone's slot which started the draft clock. 2 hour windows for the remaining time slots then 15 minute windows for the rest of the draft. I'll probably make the time limit 5-10 minutes after round 10 until 25 then will just auto the rest (until people want to go farther before auto the draft).

For some reason, the clock was not working when Matt had is set to reset.  This way, the clock works.  The good thing about drafting this way is you know when your next picks will be no matter what.  So, for you, you'll pick at 10:45, 13:30 and 18:45 tomorrow no matter what... picks won't sneak up on you like they could with the clock resetting after every pick.

It will be slow today, but starting tomorrow everything should speed up considerably.

5 hours plus here, so 15:45, 18:30 and 23:45

i dont like at all this system, too slow   :-\

It's pretty much the only system that's remotely fair when the owner base is spread all over the world. It wouldn't be much fun if you went to bed when there were 10 picks before you had to go and you woke up to find that everybody went quickly while  you were asleep and your clock expired.

In most cases, we'll move faster than the windows (and we can re-set the clock at points if we get too far ahead).

That's so true, right now it's just past midnight where I am, and I've got 2 of the next 7 picks and I'm trying to plan how much time I should wait until grabbing some sleep. I would set it to draft from my list but I don't have a decent order to my list yet, it's just a long list of decent players.

Yes, but remember, the timer doesn't reset, which is why you'll pick at 10:45, 13:30 and 18:45 (or as you said 15:45, 18:30 and 23:45) tomorrow no matter what...  Ignore the timer and follow the pick due times.
Title: Re: Inaugual Draft
Post by: Chappy on May 23, 2013, 09:47:38 am
For people confused by the system:  Go to your team warroom in statslab.  In the upper right hand corner you'll see your picks and all the times they are due...  Ignore the timer, pay attention to the due times, and you shouldn't have to worry about missing any picks.

UPDATE!

We are making some good progress with our inaugural draft. As of right now, we are at New Jersey's 3rd round pick (35th overall) and their pick is technically due at 8:45am tomorrow (5/24) but able to pick whenever.

I plan to let owners pick as they come up today and once we get to 8:00pm CST tonight, I'll stop the draft clock to reset it for the next owner's pick to be due at 8:15am CST tomorrow (8/24). From there we will be on a 15 minute draft pick windows (have your Statslab draft lists complete or be ready online) until Friday night at 8pm CST. From there, I plan to reset the draft clock again for Monday's drafting to a 10 minute window for whatever round we'll be on Monday (then will decrease the time pick limit to 5 minutes for rounds after that).

I'll send another email after today's drafting timer ending at 8pm CST so we can regroup. I just wanted to give everyone enough head's up to plan. Thanks!

Hey guys,

We made great progress today as we're at Kentucky's 4th round pick (61st overall) currently. Feel free to continue to make your pick if you are up however! We will start the draft timer back up at 8am CST (11 hours 40 minutes) from now on whoever is up at that time. From there we will have a 15 minute draft pick window until the end of the 7th round where it will shrink to 5 minutes per pick from then on.

Be sure to be ready at your time slot of have a full list of players ready in Statslab (plan accordingly so you don't run out of players on your list if you have it set to List Pick). We should be able to get close to or finish up Round 7 by 8pm CST tomorrow.

Thanks guys!

Something really weird happened, I don't have Auto draft from list selected and I have been given a pick (Dave Boyer) without actually making the pick myself. He was on my list and top of the list, however I never actually drafted him, he just got automatically assigned to me.

Check out the time stamp of this pick compared to the North Carolina pick - 12 seconds between them, very weird.

Yeah I got an error message too after I saw my pick, I think NC was set to a list pick, I definitely wasn't. Worked out OK though as I was going to decide between the guy I got and 1 other, it's not like I got a 40 year old 1 star potential player ;)

I think it's just a formatting error, what you wrote is inside a quote field followed by the actual quote.

But in regards to the e-mail issue, I am wondering if it is a server issue...

Yeah no big deal. We made awesome progress today! We have finished 7 rounds of drafting plus the 1st pick of the 8th round. I'll upload an updated game file with the 7 rounds of picks inputted.

The draft timer is paused over the weekend but everyone is free to pick if you want! I'll reset the draft timer Sunday night to start back up on Monday with whoever is up next and we'll continue the draft at 10 minutes intervals for the rest of the week until we decide to auto the rest of the draft.

Thanks guys!

We made a ton of progress on the draft this weekend. The draft timer will restart this morning at 10:00:00am with Kentucky's 8th round pick then we'll have 10 minute pick windows from here until the end of the 10th round. After that we'll go to a 5 minute pick window so be sure to be ready by your pick due time or make sure you have players in your list queue. The time will run til 8pm CST today then start back up at it's usual time tomorrow at 8am CST.

Happy Memorial Day to those in the US and happy Monday to everyone else :)!

Well once we move to the 5 minute pick window, it looks like we'll finish the 25th round at noon CST on Wednesday the 29th. I can auto the remaining rounds after this or we can continue to draft on the 5 minute timer further if everyone wants to.

25 rounds are the first team. i think thats ok so ... auto is my choice!

I know I don't want to do 125 rounds, and that given the pace we're hitting, I want to do at least 25.

Where it should in the middle, I don't know.

I do think we should probably do an even number of rounds manually, since it's a serpentine draft.

The even number of rounds is a good and fair point. I was thinking of stopping at the end of the day on Wednesday the 29th and that would get us through 30 rounds. I like stopping at 30 then automating the remaining since it'll take me some time to enter in all the auto results.

Then I could release a new file on Friday, Spring Training 1st half Monday and 2nd half Wednesday, then Opening Day Friday the 7th. Right now this is my plan.

Maybe 30 rounds (or 40, if that's the expanded roster limit) is a good number for manual. That way it ends on an even number and we get to be able to select some of those players who will be filling the minors.

If the draft gets set to auto, does it still pick from your list if you have players on it, or is it full auto with drafting determined by the AI? If it picks from your list then it should work for everyone as they can just load their lists up with some guys they want and cross their fingers :)

I like the timing, though I agree with Chappy's point about doing the auto-draft in-game: the in-game algorithm does a better job of looking at positional need, so we should wind up with fairly balanced minor leagues that way instead of finding teams of all outfielders or whatever.

Not after this draft. Our ammy drafts will be held at the end of the season in November 15th in the game each season. Draft pool released 75 days prior.

Well, statslab will indeed draft off your list until it runs out of options and then it will pick what it thinks is the best available player.

There are two problems with this, though.  (1) It doesn't take into account what you have on your roster already, so you could wind up with 75 catchers and no outfielders and (2) Matt will be left manually inputting all 125 rounds so...

I strongly recommend we use the auto draft function IN-GAME after we finish manual picks.   This will mean (1) our teams will be more balanced by position and (2) Matt will only have to manually input 25-40 rounds of picks.  As a commish, I can say that this will take quite a while, although at least there are no traded picks to worry about.

With that in mind, I wouldn't take the time to put the whole pool into your list unless you have an easy sorting method and it doesn't take you a whole lot of time.

Agree, continually seeing the guys I want be grabbed by a team two picks ahead of me is wearing me down :D

But, it has been a lot of fun evaluating the players, and given the splits of some teams who went on massive SP and MR runs there's going to some be some very active trading early on I'd expect, anyone keen to give up an RF with a great bat, who can defend and steal for a couple of scrubs? ;)

I'm finishing the draft within the game currently. I'll get everything ready for an updated league file to be uploaded on the site soon.

Please let me know of any logo, jersey, stadium updates after tonight's file is released. Any changes for your franchise will need to wait until next season after that upon the Commish's approval. Thanks!

So I'll get the updated league file up tonight then we'll have our Spring Training 1st half simmed on Friday and then 2nd half of Spring Training simmed on Monday. Then we'll have the Inaugural Season of the AFBL's Opening Day on Wednesday, June 5th.

OK, some quick questions from an OOTP online newbie here.

1. Do ALL changes I make get uploaded to the main league file (e.g. lineups, roster changes, transactions, manager settings, position changes, depth charts etc)?
2. If not all, what things won't change?
3. What steps do I take to ensure my changes get uploaded? A step by step guide would be nice here.
4. Also, in my news inbox were development report updates for other teams, should I be seeing those?
5. Why is my team listed as last in the spring standings, I know we're going to suck, but no need to rub it in so early :D

I knew I was building a "take and rake" team, but I don't think I realized just how much so until looking at the full roster today. The three-run homer will be our friend.

Here's a link to your draft results (scroll halfway down the page) Mass. Draft Results (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/reports/html/teams/team_4_all_transactions_0_0.html)

Round 10 onwards for the whole draft can be found here draft results (http://www.afblbaseball.com/afbl/reports/html/leagues/league_100_draft_log_0.html) - not sure why it's only showing part of round 10 and onwards though.
