Hector Vargas knows as well as anyone that in baseball, the biggest contracts go to the biggest hitters. At Caseyville Stadium, he made his case to be considered among that group.

The 23-year-old left fielder hammered 5 hits in 5 chances, though the remarkable effort came even as his Ottawa Lynx fell, 15-10, to the Caseyville Fighter Pilots.

"We made some bad pitches and he took advantage of it," Fighter Pilots manager told BNN sportswriters after the game. "Thankfully, we were able to do enough elsewhere that Vargas wasn't the difference."

Hector Vargas singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Genpaku Yamashita in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off Bob Gutierrez in the 8th.


On the season, Vargas is batting .358 with 7 home runs and 20 RBIs. He has played in 26 games.
