Ohio pitcher Masahide Hirata did his part in helping his team beat the New York Empire, 5-3. The right-hander kept opposing batters from doing too much damage. Mike Habowski was the winner in relief. His record is now 5-0. The losing pitcher was William Chavez. The 4th-place Empire dropped to 42-49.

Bobby Burchell went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk for Ohio. The five-time All-Star had a key at-bat in the top of the fourth. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring walk off Manny Moreno. It was his 51st walk of the season.

Hirata attributed the win to his team's "dogged determination."
