Vipers Pull Out Late Win, 5-4
|
The Arizona Vipers finished off the New Jersey Athletics, 5-4. Much of the credit belonged to designated hitter Nick Phillips. Phillips went 2 for 5 with 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice for the Vipers. Jason Eckman, 6-2, earned the win in relief. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 3 innings. The Arizona win streak is now 3 games.
The game was decided with two out in the bottom of the ninth. With Arizona trailing 4-3, Phillips jumped on a sinker from 24-year old left-handed pitcher Paul Torr and hit a 2-run home run to right-center. With one swing, the Vipers had a walk-off win.
"It was bedlam at the end," Phillips said.
