Empire Take Down Railroaders, 5-4
|
New York first baseman Willie Ashford picked up 3 ribbies while helping his team beat back the Pennsylvania Railroaders, 5-4. New York reliever Tony Britt got the win, raising his record to 1-3. Lysander Kalergi was tagged with the loss. Picking up his 30th save was 27-year old right-handed pitcher Pat Delaney.
Ashford had a game-changing home run in the top of the ninth. On a 1-1 fastball from Lysander Kalergi, he banged a solo home run to right, giving the Empire a 5-4 lead. It was the 10th home run of the year for Ashford.
New York manager Richard Hager commended his team for "banging out a nice win."
The last-place Empire are now 76-86, the Railroaders 85-77.
